I plan to purchase a Nikon D810.. I see a price of $2179 new at 42nd Street Photo... and $2990 in places like Amazon.. I also looked at Nikon.. what is the difference.. and the safe deal for that amount of money..?

For that price its more than gray market. They will nickel and dime you to increase the price on things that normally come in the box and worthless junk..

Run away.

I always buy Nikon cameras and lens from Adorama, B&H and Amazon. I have spent more than $40,000 from these sources and felt very secure. --Thanks!

now and then adorama or b&h will sell grey market cameras, but they list them as imports.

A member just posted that he dropped his D800 and sent it to Nikon for repair. If you buy that D810 at 42nd St and drop it, nikon won't repair it. You'll have to list it on ebay as "Not Working" and sell it for a few dollars. Stick with the good sellers and pay the regular price.

I very much suspect that you used 47th street photo. they were a fine dealership until they went out of business and 42nd showed up. Most likely trying to trade on the name similarity. 42nd street is NOT an authorized Nikon dealer!

Under NO circumstances should anyone use 42nd street photo.

Consider buying direct from Nikon. And you can save money buying a "refurbished" camera - reconditioned and re-calibrated to better than new condition by Nikon technicians.

Excellent advice.

DO NOT BUY... likely grey and Nikon will never even look at it to repair, adjust, calibrate, etc.... The fact that it is not labeled USA guarantee, import or such suggests this is a unethical vendor. I would never consider them for anything.

As Bill Engvall would say, "Here's your sign!" Go to this link from Nikon USA, scroll all the way to the bottom and look for the column that says "Shopping Help." At the bottom of the list is the link for "Nikon Authorized Dealers." Click on that and you will see for yourself just who here in the USA is an authorized dealer. If they ain't on this list, there's your sign!

Oh, and you'll probably need Adobe Acrobat Reader to open it. And to kill the suspense, 42nd Street is NOT on the list.

If you are an authorized dealer, does not mean you can not sell grey market imports. BH Photo is authorized Nikon dealer but they also sell grey/imported Nikon items.

My experience with Nikon refurbished products agrees with rj.

47th Street is currently featuring an Opteka 500mm f/8 manual lens with a 2X TC for $119. Has anyone bought this lens or other Opteka lenses? With the TC attached, that seems to say that the f/8 would become f/16. You'd have to be using it on a really sunny day. Any thoughts?

Heard a lot of bad stuff concerning 42nd Street Photo. Their prices all appear too good to be true. I've read of bait-n-switch issues, not sending the right stuff, trying to upsell on warranties, accessories, etc.

I personally would stick to places like B&H, Adorama, KEH, Cameta Camera, Sammy's Camera, Amazon, or even E-Bay (as long as the seller has a good rating). I would avoid 42nd Street... and like other posters' have mentioned, Nikon USA does not cover/repair gray-market Nikon gear purchased in USA. You might get Nikon Japan to fix it if there's ever a problem, but my guess is you're going to pay heavily for that not to mention the shipping and time involved...
