I work with lots of seniors and have for the last 15 years.

The best service you can do for your mother-in-law would be to spend the %60 and get her a copy of Photoshop Elements 13. The QUICK mode will do all she needs but she may soon move to the GUIDED mode. Many of the nearby adult education and senior centers have classes or an in-house guru to help.

The QUICK interface is very intuitive. The wealth of books from the local library of bookstore will give her a feeling of community. IF she is web savvy then there are many on-line resources as well.

Most of the free programs have only on-line reference materials so her access to tutorials will depend on her surfing ability.

PSE 14 is due out soon. so the cost of PSE 13 at Amazon is way down.

Try Picasa from google. It is free and easy to use.

What about Windows photo gallery? It's already on the pc. I use it sometimes even though I have Photoshop Elements.

That was my first thought.

Irfanview, simple editing, cropping, printing, viewing and free of charge.

Virtually all file formats supported.

I used Irfanview, and another called ACDsee nearly twenty years ago.

So much older than Picasa, by a factor of two. Used to always be simple. It's been a long time, but I would encourage looking at both of them.

Thanks jcarlosjr, I have an upwards struggle as she has no concept of the web and is writing every thing down at the moment including how to turn the computer on. The one she had was her late husbands and she did not use it apart from playing solitaire. All she wants to do is crop and print her pictures but had problems using the printer despite me going round and showing her numerous times...Mind Mom in law said I have lots of patience in showing her, which I think I will need....PSE would be a waste of money as 99%of it would not be used, hence the free one...

Your Mother in Law deserves a pat on the back and a big hug for her undertaking. And you do too for helping her!

My 85 year old Mother in Law has just got a new computer and as she is not very computer literate I would be grateful if anyone knows of a very simple and easy editing program, the main thing she wants to do is to crop and print, she wanted a new printer and when I turned the computer on it came up with every out of date and messages saying that the system did not support loads of things and they could not be updated, hence the new one.... I know about picasso but wondered if there are any more....
