The download will be in a zipped folder, but it should open if you click on it. In the zipped folder will be a folder and a file. The folder contains the pdf instructions, in multiple languages. The file, of about 29 mb, is the update. Just copy it to your CF or SD card and you should be good. I only put one card in the camera when doing the update. Probably makes no difference, but it is less hunting the camera has to do to find the file.

I had two cards in when I updated the firmware. I put it on my CF card which is my primary, and it found it immediately.

do you know a good alternative for winzip on a PC? Mine doesn't work.

I think recent versions of windows come with the ability to unzip files.

I figured it wouldn't make any difference but I popped the other card out anyway. Who knows, I could have been the one person in 10,000 with an easily confused 7DII! :-D

There are several free zip programs that will unzip .zip files.

Being the idiot that I am, can you please tell me exactly HOW to download the firmware? Do I download to the computer, then use the transfer cable from my camera, or?? And then use menu on my camera? What menu item?
Thanks!

First off, go to the website whose link is posted earlier on this page. Look down the page and click on "Firmware". When that opens look down the page and you will see updates for both Windows and Mac. Two will be dated from May of this year and two will be dated from this month. From the two for this month select the one for your operating system and download it to your desktop. Close the page, you no longer need it. Look at the file on your desktop. It will be a zipped folder. When you click on it it should open up and show you a standard folder and a 29mb file. If it doesn't open you will need a program like WinZip to open it. The standard folder inside the zip folder contains update directions in pdf files. The first one should be English. If you can't open the pdf file go to adobe.com and download and install the free Adobe Reader. The 29mb file is what you load onto your SD or CF card. Just drag and drop. Or, you can install it using the USB cable for your camera. The directions explain both methods. Just be sure to follow ALL the directions. Be sure to check on the camera menu to make sure you have version 05 firmware when you are all done. That's it! Any questions, just ask, or PM me.
