I'm personally waiting to see if Microsoft brings out a larger Surface Pro (said to be 14 inches). We'll know on October 6th. I also recommend the Toshiba brand (mid to high level models). I'm a retired IT guy and would only purchase Toshiba's for my clients because they held up so well. Some of my clients were really hard on their laptops but they loved their Toshiba's. What ever you purchase be sure to have at least 12 preferably 16MB of ram and an SSD hard drive of 256G or higher. I know the solid state drives will push your cost up but they run silently, they run cooler and about 10 times faster than a standard mechanical hard drive. Go with the smaller drive to keep your cost down and push your overage into the cloud.

I thank all of you for your comments. I am convinced in buying the MacBook Pro. I am going to the Apple Store tomorrow to determine if I want the 13 or 15 inch.
Your help is greatly appreciated

Tom

If not in a great hurry, they usually have a sale around Black Friday! Obviously, I think you're making a great choice.

Also, don't be concerned about the lack of an optical drive. Some much software is downloaded today they have become less necessary. I would buy a portable one from Newegg for less than $ 75. I have a samsung one and, while I do use it now and again, and it is handy to have, it's not as necessary as it once was. When added to a laptop internally it increases the size and weight of the machine unnecessarily, IMHO. Best of luck! Don't forget, if you are a student, or connected to education, you may be eligible for a discount, usually about $ 100 on a laptop.

I have two laptops, one with a seventeen inch screen and another with a 12 inch screen. The big one I use for image and video, it's a real powerhouse with lots of memory and disk and four processors.

I discovered quickly that the big one is ok on a table but that's about it. Travelling with it is like carrying around a huge cement brick. Its size also makes for poor battery performance. I'm happy when I can get two or three hours

So that's where it stays, on my table at home. In the meantime the little one is feather light in comparison, delivers up to fourteen hours of battery power, and it very portable. So that's the one I travel with.

In order to move data between them I use a 128 GB flash drive which contains all my data. Images are on an external hard drive which can plug into either machine too. Usually when I'm traveling I travel with the little one and simply load my images there. When I get back I transfer them to my external hard drive and work on them with the big laptop istead.

I find this approach works best for me.

You won't be sorry, i got the 15" MacBook pro Retina 4 months ago, it's a refurb from Apple, but you would never know the difference from a new one, and at $1600.00 it was a deal.

PC consulting 23 years now. All my clients who take my recommendations use Toshiba, as do I. Most take my recommendations.

I like ASUS and Samsung.

Frankly, most players in the market produce decent laptops, with the two common fail points being rough handling of the power jack on plug in or removal. Never travel with the AC adaptor plugged in. Run your battery down to warning level at least once a month to retain battery life.

Second biggest fail point... run them on your lap or soft surfaces. heat is the enemy, so blow them out through the cooling vents while running with canned compressed air regularly.

Toshiba first, then ASUS, then Samsung. Your budget should never be a problem. I5 processor with 8 Gb RAM (or more) and a minimum 500 Gb hard drive.

Pushing your budget would involve a 256 Gb SSD drive, I7 Cpu, 16 Gb RAM, and look for a computer with a second drive capability at 500 Gb.

An SSD bigger than 256 is a waste of money and hard on the drive unless you know the things you SHOULD NOT do on SSD, like file indexing and defragmentations... BOTH No.. No's!!!

If you get a MacBook Pro, be sure to replace the Apple OS with Windows 10.

It's already proven itself to run a MacBook faster than the APPLE OS.

I think the MacBook is slated to be dropped soon. Check while you visit with the APPLE store. Oh Wait, they may not tell you that news.

And you may ask them why they sell the same PC components for $500 to $600 more than a PC?

I know many IT Professionals and not a one would say what you have! Doesn't mean you're wrong, just means your opinion is in the minority. Windows over Apple OS? Really? When was the last time Microsoft had a stable version of Windows? Windows 10 over Apple Yosemite, I don't think so. I was, at one time, a Microsoft freak, but no more. Not after I used an Apple for a while. I have the best world - both! But I do spend a lot more time fixing all sorts of problems on my Windows machine and almost none on the Apple. Windows - Plug and Pray. Apple - Plug and Play! My PERSONAL opinion! OH, I would agree that Apple overcharges a bit, but then their hardware rarely gives out.

Know the cost is pretty comparable when looking at the features. To get the speed, space and graphics you need for editing photos you're going to pay a grand or more. ASUS would be my choice if I were to buy a PC. Although I'm an iMac user these seem to be top quality systems.
