Too many diseases in Africa. When William Holden started his game preserve in Kenya the country was safe and had a stable government. I'd opt for Taiwan if I had a choice. Taiwan has a stable government, first rate medical and dental care, and an excellent public transportation system. If you ever do visit Taiwan, go between October and March, unless you enjoy heat and high humidity. The food and accommodations are very inexpensive. Have a great time in Africa no matter which country you choose.

Having been fortunate to have traveled the lengtalh and breadth of Africa I would have no hesitation in reccomending the Ngorongoro Crater in Tanzania if you have only a week. If you have longer I would suggest adding the Selous Reserve and the The Serengeti in that order of preference.
The Crater has virtually every animal that the other reserves and parks have but in much smsller amounts

As much as I love Kenya, Botswana and Zimbabwe would also give you the opportunity to visit Livingston in Zambia, Victoria Falls, and see the Zambezi River. Bucket list!

If you are primarily interested in animals, Kenya and Tanzania are the places to go. We were on safari in both countries, and we had the better animal sightings in Kenya. The Masai Mara, which is the northern part of the Serengetti, provided not only the most animal sightings, but also allowed us to get closer to the animals than any other place. If you are interested, I will PM you some of my images.

thank you everyone for all the expert advice. My cousin has decided he really doesn't want to go to Africa--so I will keep all this info just in case I ever get another chance to go there. Instead we are now looking at A Grand tour of Europe, one that takes us to Germany, Austria, and Switzerland, and one that goes to the Balkans, Serbia, and Croatia
any thoughts on any of those?

Grand Tour of Europe

A few Questions --

1. What is your budget (not including air fare, or souvenirs)
2. What level of accommodation? Do you need 5* hotels, or will 3* do?
3. How long do you wish to travel for?
4. How hectic -- You can either try to see as many different places you can (hectic) or try to spend 2 or 3 days in each place (and see fewer places)?
5. How adventurous are you? Do you want a full guided tour? Transportation and Hotel only (you'll figure out what to do when you get there), or do you just need airfare, any you'll take the bus or train (or rent a car) to get from city to city?

A trip to anywhere, and you choose Africa?

If you chose the International Space Station, you could photograph the whole world. ;)
And be safer than Africa, too.

Have a great trip! (Stay away from Somalia)

That's a tough decision to make, but one that would be nice to have to make. Good Luck with your decision. Lou

If your prize lists a River Cruise in any European Country or Countries, that would be my choice. We have taken 4 so far (including Russia, Moscow to St Petersberg). You will never regret it. Less formal that bigger boats and the food is just as good.

It depends upon whether you want to: contract Black Plague, contract AIDS, contract Ebola, contract Cholera, contract Malaria, contract Meningitis, contract Swine Fever, be kidnapped and raped and sold into sex slavery by Boko Haram, be murdered by Al-Qaeda, or die when the pilot of your plane hijacks it, and flies it into a mountain to die for Allah. Have your next of kin tell us what you decided.

Looking at the Tours on the GoAhead website.

I guess it depends on whether you want to see more places (and spend less time in each) or whether you want a few days in each place. I've done both, and there are Pro's and cons to each.

I'm not sure that any of their tours go every where you want, but the Germany, Switzerland & Austria tour that they have might work for you(especially if you did the Budapest Extension). Or Maybe the Grand Tour, London to Rome (possibly with the Florence Extension)

No. It is why I avoid Africa..."like the plague." To each his / her own, though.
