I prefer to buy through local speciality camera stores but most of my equipment is purchased on line. A recent lens purchase experience pretty much touches all of my bases.
Adorama and B & H both offered the lens I wanted for about $400.00.
Local store price $560.00. I told the local that I'd prefer to do business face to face, and would pay a premium to do that, but not that much of a premium. Did they have any flexibility in price? No! $560.00 take it or leave it. I left it.

I feel exactly the same way, with the same experience. Now, when doing my research, I'll compare prices between online (Amazon, Adorama & 17th St Photo are my primary online vendors) and my local store. If the price difference is not significant, I'll go local. But when it stretches into serious dollars, I have to buy online.
I want to support my local store, because they do provide a lot of helpful information and support, but the budget has limitations too.

I too prefer my local guys but the price and the availability also factor in.

I have bought a lot of stuff from B&H with no problem. I bought a Nikon D300 body only from Adorama. They did not tell me it was a demo model. When I got it I found it to be defective so I called them to see about replacing it. I could not get anyone to talk to me "Oh, you need to talk to Joe. I'll transfer you" Joe never answered his phone or returned my many calls.
I had previously bought a group of lenses from Adorame. One that they sent was the wrong, much more expensive, model. The guy who had screwed up called and screamed at me that I had better send it back right now or he would charge it to my credit card. I apparently didn't correct his mistake fast enough for him so he called and screamed at me again. Needless to say, I will never deal with them again nor can I recommend them to anybody.
B&H is good and I have recently tried Samy's and gotten wonderful, cheerful service and great prices when you factor shipping in. I would recommend them.

Hi all, as a person who is thinking of buying photo gear from online stores,my question is "has anyone here purchased cameras and other photo gear online" ???and what results either positive or negative ???,thanks in advance,Gavin.

I bought a Canon DSLR Rebel online at B & H out of NYC and was pleased with the service and price. I buy most of my accessories for cameras and camping from Amazon and have been very pleased at both the service and the prices.

B&H and Adorama are both excellent. If you go on ebay check the sellers feedback and also make sure that he offers a return policy. There are some dealers who buy cameras at an estate or garage sale and don't have a clue if they work or not. I have been a buyer and seller of cameras for many years and find that 99% of people are honest.

I have bought several pieces of photography equipment on line, and never had any problems. Research what you are going to buy first, then check the prices.

Have used: B&H Photo, Adorama, Amazon, Flash Zebra, Samy's Camera, Calumet, Epson, Canon, Hoodman, and others. They all aim to please the customer.

If in doubt about an Internet sales site, then order something small and inexpensive, and see how it goes.

I too, use B&H and Adorama quite regularly. I always do my homework before making a purchase so that when I finally decide what I want, I know that what I order from them is exactly what I'm after. And they're wonderful to talk with if you still have doubts before purchasing. :)

I have purchased computers from MacMall, cameras. lenses, other photo gear from Beach Camera, and on Amazon. Also books from Amazon. All of it was very satisfactory. The only complaint, if you want one, is that Amazon is a bit slow to deliver. Still, they will have the order at your house in three to seven work days.
