[quote=Mormorazzi]I'd like to hear from folks who own the current Nikkor 24-70. Will you be selling your current lens to buy the new VR version or are you content without it. I've been pining after the 24-70 for several years now, but I'm wondering if I should spring for the VR (or buy new outdoor furniture with the savings).[/quote

I have the 24mm-70mm and love it. It's one of my go to lens for shooting models. Because I use it hand held I always dream of a version with VR. Now San Jose Camera & Video, in California is having a Nikon rebate. They offered me $1000.00 for my old lens if I purchase the new VR version.

I am very happy with the previous model and don't need to switch to the VR version.

Thanks for all of your replies, Hogs. So far, not one of you plans to upgrade to the VR version. Is there ANYONE in the pen who plans to upgrade or buy the new one instead of current version?

BTW, I have the 24-70. Use it side by side with my 70-200. If the world was going to end today I would strap them to my belt so they came with me to Nirvana.

Then I'll bring the 14-24 and 200-500 so we'll be covered, lol!

I don't have the Nikon 24-70, but did get a Sigma 24-105. I appreciate the image stabilization. It surprised me how much better the images look. I think you will be equally satisfied with image stabilization (VR) . Furniture just wears out and the birds mess it up.

I also have a Nikkor 24-70 F2.8 and see no need to upgrade. The new one is bigger, more expensive and lastly, takes bigger filters (82mm)! The current one was an original member of the "Trinity" in good standing....

I have the 24-70 Canon with no VR or IS. Bought it as Canon were coming out with the IS for an extra $900. Don't see any advantage worth $900 to have moved to the IS and I'm sure this goes with the Nikkor. Excellent walk around lens.

I use the current lens as my go to daily lens. I love it and don't see any reason to change. Maybe when the new one is released you can pick up a used one from one of those people who must have the latest and greatest. You will not be disappointed.

I'd wait until it shows up on nikonusa.com's Refurbished Products site... Buy the non-VR 24-70 f/2.8 now on the Refurbished site!

Yes, I plan to buy the new one. San Jose Camera & Video, in California is doing a Nikon trade in for $1000.00 on your old version.

Waste of money , buy two used primes a 24 and a 70 or 80 or a 90 macro

My 24-70 is the lens I keep on my main camera 95% of the time. Unless there is a huge change in image quality - I see no reason to replace the lens, just to get the image stabilization feature.

If it ain't broke -don't fix it. However, if I was in the market for this type lens - go for it - you will love it.

Thanks to all of you Hogs for responding!

I was in Manhattan last week and took the subway down to B&H. My first stop was in the used-equipment department, where they had three 24-70 lenses (non-VR, of course), one previously opened and two in unopened boxes. I bought one of the unopened lenses for $1550, which includes a warranty. I also bought a new camera strap to hold this beast--the BlackRapid Cross Shot.

Here are two of the first handheld photos I took in our dimly lit apartment overlooking the Hudson River. This lens is AWESOME!

I have the old 24-70 and I've been really happy with it from the day it came out of its box.

I've used it for years to stellar results. Over this period I've also never had a camera shake problem. The short focal length and the speed of the lens always tends to provide me enough shutter speed to offset movement.

When the shutter speed is too low for a good exposure I use a flash which works effectively too since I don't usually photograph distant objects with that lens. It's more of an indoor lens for me.

So I'm not going to rush out to buy the new one. I really don't need the VR.

However ... if I didn't have that lens already, I would be willing to consider the VR version.

I use a Nikon D3, D800 and D200 and the lens works perfectly on all three.
