I'd like to hear from folks who own the current Nikkor 24-70. Will you be selling your current lens to buy the new VR version or are you content without it. I've been pining after the 24-70 for several years now, but I'm wondering if I should spring for the VR (or buy new outdoor furniture with the savings).

I have the current version--have had it since Dec 2010--and I love it! I don't feel the need to upgrade.

Like KENPIC, I too have had the 24-70 for several years. I love this lens and I also see no need to upgrade.

I don't have a 24-70. I like my 24-120 f/4 G for $1300/$800 new/refurb.

What I can find, considering the 24-70 VR is still a couple of weeks away from release. Most "reviews" are filled with "hope it's that good" comments.

Good: Electronic shutter, VR (of course), fluorine coating, slighty sharper, cool padded case but same as the older lens.

Bad: $2400 instead of $1800, but that's the same as the 70-200 f/2.8 VR. Wider - 88mm filters instead of 77mm. Longer by about 3/4 inch. Heavier by 6 ounces. Monster lens. Lack of hands-on comparisons.

Ugly: Really nothing except size and weight, and Nikon is counting on the good points for this "holy trinity" replacement.

Bottom line, for that price I'm willing to wait a few months 'til they're in the field for awhile and then see what the comparisons are like. Hold off until winter and your patio furniture will probably be on sale anyway. :XD:

I have the 24-70. It's my primary "go to" lens. Love the 2.8. Like any fast lens it is a bit heavy, but I've never felt the need for VR.

I have owned the 24-70 for three years. I don't anticipate upgrading to the VR version; but, one never knows for sure.

Outdoor furniture! Instead of new glass!! Ohhhhh, it makes me sad just to hear such folly!!!!

I saw a post earlier today where the OP was selling the non VR model so that he could buy the new model. Might be your opportunity.

Have used 24-70 lens with both a D300s and a D810 and been very happy with results. I see no reason to upgrade to the newer lens. Before I bought the lens I considered the Tamron 24-70 because it had VR but decided to buy the Nikon. If I use good technique and take advantage of things that can help me be more stable (door frame, fence rails, etc) I can manage quite well.

That's funny! I have the current one and did not even realize it doesn't have VR until I just saw your post saying a new one with VR is coming out. I don't miss it. I see no need to upgrade to the new lens.

I love this lens. I love the range, it's perfect as a walk-around lens for event photography for candid photos.

I enjoy reading this fellow's analyses on various lenses. http://kenrockwell.com/

I also am very happy with my 24-70. And, because of the cost, I just can't see upgrading at this point to the VR. $2400 is just too steep a price.

This is interesting, I see there are other modifications besides the VR. o that maybe a consideration. But I saw an article on the 24-70 and it was discussing the missing VR. The writer went on to tell exactly why VR was not and could not be included on this lens. At the time it sounded 'sound' reasoning. So the question is was that person right and did Nikon do this and you will not see much difference on a whole or at high/low/medium zoom? The question waits to be answered.

BTW, I have the 24-70. Use it side by side with my 70-200. If the world was going to end today I would strap them to my belt so they came with me to Nirvana.
