That remark about greed was a bit harsh, there are lots of member/dealers on here who offer very good unbiased advice.

I agree 100% Been here a few years and have never thought that someone was promoting an individual business. Other than some snarky and cranky remarks, most people here are very helpful.

I hope you are NOT referring to MT Shooter as I have not seen one single post from him with this type of slant. (No, I am not related, I just find him very helpful!)

I agree. I have never seen anything from him that wasn't helpful.

I buy lot of stuff from China Japan Not only camera stuff and never had to pay shipping or duty but I never ordered something that was real expensive like a lens but what I did order I found the quality to be real good at half the cost i Usually order things from there not available here. Be prepared to wait a month though unless you have it air shipped then 2 weeks

I bought a lens from Japan through ebay, and there were no extra charges or delays.

I have bought items like SD card off of Ebay and they are shipped from Japan and it takes a while to get them. So far they have been good deals but if you go Ebay you might ask hogs what they think. I have so far had no trouble but have heard of people who have had problems with Ebay. The hogs know what they are talking about and MT Shooter is VERY knowledgeable about anything he is one sharp shooter and I don't know him just have read his post and the guy is sharp.

There are no customs duties, fees etc. on stuff you import for personal use. Period.

This topic was recently covered in an earlier post, you might try a search if you want more info.

I was stationed in Japan. There were a lot of companies that offered duty free items,.

When we purchased at PX, we were buying US labeled goods. Everything purchased on the economy was allowed in gratis as it was considered to be "used" merchandise. Did not pay a penny of duty on my goodies when returning after two years in Japan, a year in Iceland, or 14 months floating around the Western Pacific on a big gray whale.

That is rather offensive. The only one I know of is MT_shooter, and he has helped me out in the past. I recently went to him for specific advice, and it did lead to a sale, but he has helped me and many others on here with advice which would in no way gain him any benefit, monetary or otherwise.

This particular thread is one example. How can advice on import duty or taxes gain any profit?

There are often posts on here which are less than kind, shall we say. This one, I see as a personal attack on at least one valued member.

MT Shooter has been very helpful to me on several occasions. I have PM'd him for help and he has responded quickly with answers for me. I have not purchased anything from him and he never tried to sell me anything. He is one of the good guys.

If you're buying Nikon, you need to be aware that warranties are difficult to obtain when purchases are made out of country. Several years ago, I was forced to buy from Canada when the arrival of the 500 FII was eminent. I paid 3% of the cost collected by UPS.

Please keep in mind, there are members on this forum that run their own camera business and their advice might be convoluted by their own greed.

As far as I am aware, and I have been reading this forum for some time now, there is only one member who runs a camera business, and that is MT Shooter. If your remark is directed at him, it is dead wrong. If you can name a couple of others who own their camera businesses, that will take the edge off your comment to some extent.

So just exactly WHAT in my previous statement can be construed as "convoluted by greed"???

Bought an old Minolta lens recently on eBay from a Japanese seller. Price quoted included shipping. Arrived in about two weeks. No additional charges.

Right on.I have sent him PM with a question and he answered it immediately ,and I'm from a diff. country and he pretty well knows with the extras associated with a purchase from U.S to Can. can be substantial. So most likely I would not be a customer on any large purchase. He has helped a lot of people on this forum an if the poster was referring to him he must have a peeve with him over something. Most of MT's post is just a warning about shady businesses or gray markets or warranty issues. To most of us he's just telling the truth. Have you every seen him actually asking for people to shop at his store.?

I think he has always been honest and calles them as he sees them. He may not always be right but when he is wrong (those very few times) it is an honest mistake and there was never any greed or evil intent on his part.

Warranties from NikonUSA are NOT difficult to obtain as long as you abide by the rules. If you are purchasing a Nikon product in the US from an authorized dealer, you will get your warranty. If you don't purchase an item that was intended for sale in the USA (grey market) or you purhcase an item second hand ( not original purchaser from an authorized dealer) or if you are not going to get the item worked on at all in the United States. You are welcome to ship it back to what ever country it was inteneded to be sold in for warranty (remember, In the United States, the additional 4 years of warranty is automatic, in other countries, it may be available for additional cost). Also, if you are from another country and you purchased your equipment in your home country and it breaks while you are hear (and you provide a copy of the original invoice made out to you) Nikon will repair the item at the regular repair fee as if it was being repaired out of warranty. In adddition, if you are from the United States and you are traveling abroad and purchase equipment, If the invoice is made out to you and you can provide a copy of your hotel bill, entry and exit documentation from that country or other proof that the equipment was purchased leagaly while you were visiting, the equipment will be repaired at the regular repair rates... Other than than, Nikon will refuse to repair the item. This is an effort to protect those comapanies that elect to CORRECTLY sell Nikon product in the US.
