Has anyone purchased a product from Japan? I am looking at a lens from Japan, but know absolutely nothing about duty taxes and such. Any info would help. Thanks!

I bought three lenses this year from eBay, all located in Japan and I have done so many times before for a number of years. Never had a problem, I never had to pay any duty tax (even so it says, it is the responsibility of the buyer) as of today!

I'm really curious - what are you considering buying and why are you even thinking of importing it yourself rather than spending your money at home ?

For new gear I would agree. Older stuff, and particularly vintage gear is often more available and cheaper from Japan et al, even figuring in the shipping.

Yes, I agree. You give a valid reason. My question was directed to the OP, by the 'reply to' rather than making a 'reply' to the thread or starting a new topic.

Thanks

So just exactly WHAT in my previous statement can be construed as "convoluted by greed"???

MT Shooter, you are the only dealer (for lack of better term) here that I know of. I was on the sidelines just reading in the past. Just recently became vocal. Never once have I ever seen or heard anything derogatory about you. I find his statement very offense to you.

When we purchased at PX, we were buying US labeled goods. Everything purchased on the economy was allowed in gratis as it was considered to be "used" merchandise. Did not pay a penny of duty on my goodies when returning after two years in Japan, a year in Iceland, or 14 months floating around the Western Pacific on a big gray whale.

When I traveled from the US to Germany a customs official (who saw my cameras/lenses) gave me a form with my serial numbers, etc. He said that it was for my protection upon return. He also said you never know what the climate will be like when you return. I had one camera that was not USA branded. Yes, I was in the military at that time.

I've ordered several items (all less than $40) on Amazon which shipped from China. I didn't pay any additional duty or fees.
