I use it and like it very much. It one if the ways my models gain access to their images.
I use it, it is good for passing things to people. I am not allowed to place things in Drop Box from my work though. It is obviously out of my companies control. So technically, you don't know who has access to the stuff you put there.
I have used it successfully when using email to transfer a large batch of photos was not really possible. I haven't used it recently, I do remember uploading large batches of files from photoshoots to get to customers, but I seem to remember that it took like a whole day and longer to complete the transfer.

It works, and is useful, what makes you think that it isn't a cloud service?
It's a cloud in service, but not in name, like iCloud, etc.
I utilize Dropbox to store files that I may need when traveling. Also to share large files with people
I use dropbox between my home network computers, which works fine. I also used to do some work on elance (too little money for too much time) and some of the clients used it also to transfer files back and forth.

Okay... now I'm even more confused. You upgraded to 10GB for $9.99/mo? Is everyone getting different plans offered to them?
this offer was on their website, and I believe, still is.
Silly question I know, I have CCPS and Lightroom on my desktop and laptop. When I download a shed load of photos to be edited onto my desktop, naturally they are not on my laptop too. Can I use Dropbox (so nobody else can view them)to put these photos in and carry on editing them on my laptop.
It is a question that has been haunting me for ages, silly me I have been downloading the same Flash card onto both machines so naturally the editing has to be done all over again and ends up with different edits.
Thanks for asking the question, I was about to set up a new topic on the very subject myself.

I used it for a while. Then, it started duplicating folders all over my hard drive. I had about 6 different 'dropbox' folders, and no idea which ones were actually being synced to their server.
I contacted tech support, and got a message saying, basically, "this is interesting, but we don't have time to look into it". Great support philosophy. Haven't touched them since.

Although it IS actually a 'cloud' service, it's extremely handy for sharing anything that's too large to send via email. That's my primary use for Dropbox. Sure would miss it if I no longer had it.

Free is best. There are so many free storage/sharing sites, that paying usually isn't necessary.

Not so silly of a question. The drive will initially act as an external drive to your computer or device. You actually have to jump through a couple of hoops to allow others to view whatever you put in your drive, and even at that, you can allow others to view some folders in the cloud drive but not other folders that you wish to keep private.
If you are talking about storing your pictures on Dropbox then editing them directly from Dropbox, you will probably become frustrated very quickly, as the speed of your edits will be directly dependent on the speed of your internet, network or Wi-Fi connection. You can load the pictures to Dropbox, then just download the pictures you want to edit at that time to your laptop to help free up drive space.

Hi,
I use dropbox for business and personal . Its been configures so that the files are synced to all subscribing computers and are stored in the Dropbox cloud. The cloud stores the history of those files . So you have the history and several copies of the data in case the cloud disappears. Very reassuring and much easier than sharing .
Our IT advisors did mention that a lot of people think that there is a security issue with dropbox and I have heard this a few times but can't find anything concrete .

Their basic plan is 2Gb, which is free. Anyone can get it. However, they have various subscription plans available for purchase.
The new desktop I bought earlier in the year came with a 'free for one year' subscription to 20Gb. I'm sure they are using various methods of making themselves known and used.
