Growing trend over here as well. 2 reasons.

a) We often get an aerosol of gloop and compressed air, and if that doesn't repair it the tyre is not worth repairing (when it works).

b) This saves weight, so when the car is tested on the standard EU economy cycle (a theoretical test that is the same for all manufacturers) a higher mpg might be achieved.

Note that in practice no one gets close to the theoretical figure, but at least it gives a comparison for all vehicles.

Very true!

Another reason spares aren't sold with cars is to cut costs. A dealer can sell for less and still make their profit margin.

And still another reason is people want to do custom wheels and don't want the spare.

No spare in my BMW; it has run flats. It is claimed I can drive up to 50 miles on a flat to get me to safety. Lots of controversy around this topic in the car forums. Run flats typically provide a harsher ride than non-run flats. I stick with them because many of the areas I have to drive in as part of my job limits my ability to change a tire safely. I'm getting close to needing tires and I read that the latest generation of RFTs have better ride quality. They are also more expensive than non-run flats.

LOL, I just went out to my BMW roadster and lifted the mat. No tire, but a jack and tools. Grudgingly I checked the manual and it told me to use the jack handle to lower the wheel, 2 screw points, and slide toward rear of car and remove from carrier. One tire fits both sizes on car. 50mph.....

I hate it when that happens! Stupid book...

There has been a serious problem with inflammable sealant being used. When a shop removes the tire, if there is a spark, there is also an explosion.

I'm sure the cost savings means more to manufacturers, although saving weight and getting higher mpg is also important. In the US, we have something called CAFE - Corporate Average Fuel Economy. Averaging all cars produced, a company must reach a certain mpg figure. Saving just a tiny amount of fuel for a million cars adds up fast.

It's worse. I turned down a good deal on a 2015 Honda Accord Hybrid at the last minute when I realized that there was no spare and no jack. To add insult to injury, there is no place to place a spare other than in the trunk, thus limiting your ability to carry luggage.

For some reason, the care makers have decided that we are always able to 1) get a good cell phone signal to call for help, 2) that we will always be accessible to road side assistance in a short period of time and that AAA or whatever will always be responsive, 3) that we don't mind waiting with our car on a freeway (or other even more unsafe area) until help arrives, and 4) that the tire sealer inflator package they sell with the car can fix any flat (in other words, no one will ever , ever rip out their sidewall).

Our only recourse is to refuse to buy such cars!

Many years ago, purchased a new car for the wife. It came sans floor mats, jack or spare tire. Emailed the company and complained. You spend a little over 30k you should expect something. Couple of days later received a reply to head back to the dealership to pick up the items I complained about. By the way, the spare wasn't one of those little donut type tires either.

I'd kind of like a crank-starter back up in case my battery dies. Over the years I've probably had more dead batteries than flat tires.

Then you would have loved the link yesterday that shows how to start an older VW bug with a pull rope. Yep, just like a lawn mower.

At least the rope won't kick back and break your arm. Eh?
