Well y'all, I had a real rough day today doing all my pre-season drug testing, paperwork, uniform control and all the other fun stuff I've done for 8 years already. However, this year, I'm doing it a month earlier than usual due to NO SNOW!!! It was still beautiful there, waterfalls were not at capacity, but they should be real soon. Two more storms headed this way. So if you're planning a trip to the park, C'mon up, it's beautiful here. I will be driving the open air tram in the Mariposa grove of giant Sequoias...... Where size REALLY does matter. Just ask for John, I'm the one who's always smiling there.
Well y'all, I had a real rough day today doing all... (show quote)

I won't,say 'turkey',like some... why downgrade a poor turkey????? but all the other words are mild compared to mine... your mean, cruel and vicious!!!! all us pooooorrr peoples who can't get there..[especially since I can remember it 70 years ago]...

Something to consider here. Every year about this time the parks hire about 2000 people for each park. The season lasts about 6 months. Usually from May til November. There are several job catagories to choose from. We get new faces in the Mariposa grove every year. A lot of people who are retired will work at a different park every year. You can go to Yosemitepark.com for more info. I will be starting my 9th season any day now, and I have NEVER had a job that's this much fun.

Looks like I will be hiking Half Dome in mid June. There is a new system for permits this year. Over 1600 people applied for the 300 permits for the same day as me. We find out for sure this Friday, but I noticed that the same agency that I paid my application fee too withdrew $10 (permits for two people) from my debit account yesterday. Now I need to get in shape!

I may be wrong here but I thought the permits were free

New system this year. You have to apply online (recreation.gov) for a chance at a lottery drawing. You pick your preferred days, delcare the number of hikers in your party and such. Then you submit with your $4.50 (non-refundable) application fee. Then you take a chance to see if you get picked.

If you get lucky and get selected, then you pay $5 per person in your group to get your permits.

They cut way back on the number of people hiking the cables.....and started charging for the permits. But it remains to be seen, just $5 this year....will it be $10 next year?

I heard that last year a group were grabbing up all the permits, and I think they were selling them. I'm probably wrong here, just saying what I heard. I think 1000 climbers a day were doing the cables. That's a lot of climbers. A couple years ago I was at Glacier point watching the climbers walking over the top of half dome. Incredible. (I have a Canon XL-1 camcorder with a great telephoto lens on it.) Good luck, hope you're able to do it.

Thanks for the great info. I've never been to Yosemite, but I'm keeping your posts for reference and hoping my 'photo buddy' and I can plan a trip there before long.

Hope you'll be able to use them real soon. The place is incredible. I meet people who have lived within 50 miles of the park all their life and have never been there. I have done over 4000 tours in the Mariposa grove and I still find something new every time. Have seen 3 deer giving birth, several bears, and all kinds of wildlife. And for a dumb ole city slicker like me, there's never a dull moment. I get paid to work in a place where close to 4 million visitors a year from around the world pay big bucks to see.

How long of a waiting period do you have to wait?

You had to "apply" with your application between March 1-31 (that was it for the entire climbing season). Then they reveal the lucky winners Friday, April 13th.

Of course, like I said earlier, they deducted $10 from my debit (Visa) card yesterday. Leads me to believe I'm finally a lottery winner.

as you can figure, from my comment 'I can remember'.. I was about 8 at the time, and because of unfortunate circumstances,
not able to work, as I would like to.. so your info[known to me]
is great info for others who-should-be interested..if you haven't
guessed--I love the "wild", even that tamed into a park..--joe

When you're on the valley floor, try to go to the Ansel Adams studio. They have photography classes that you can take. (I think they're free also.) A friend of mine is an instructor there. Her name is Cristine Loberg, and she's a great photographer. They do field trips from there. There's also the Hills studio in Wawona, next to the hotel. I have never been in there but have been told it's really nice. I think they have photos and paints. Speaking of Wawona, it was in a movie back around the early 60s. It was called "36 hours", and starred James Garner.
