Well y'all, I had a real rough day today doing all my pre-season drug testing, paperwork, uniform control and all the other fun stuff I've done for 8 years already. However, this year, I'm doing it a month earlier than usual due to NO SNOW!!! It was still beautiful there, waterfalls were not at capacity, but they should be real soon. Two more storms headed this way. So if you're planning a trip to the park, C'mon up, it's beautiful here. I will be driving the open air tram in the Mariposa grove of giant Sequoias...... Where size REALLY does matter. Just ask for John, I'm the one who's always smiling there.

I feel for you poor guy, having to spend the entire day in a beautiful place. You had better hurry and drive to the city and sit in traffic before it's to late. Maybe you will get some snow with this storm.

There are several things to see there. I think my favorite is Glacier point. From there you can almost reach out and touch Half Dome. There are also a few waterfalls that can be seen from there. Glacier point road may still be closed due to snow. It was closed yesterday and we got more snow last night and today. If you enter from the south, you will be two miles from the Mariposa grove of giant Sequoias. There's Wawona, about 4 miles from the south entrance, there you'll find the Pioneer center. With buildings, wagons and other historic things to see. Plus, it's free. The most popular spot though is the Valley floor. There you can see some waterfalls, the Merced river flows down the center of it. Upper Yosemite falls is the second highest waterfall in the world. A favorite place of mine is the meadow across from El Capitan. Have a picnic lunch there and try to find the climbers on El Cap. You will need some binoculars or telephoto lens to see any, even then they are hard to find. Be sure to buy gas outside of the park, cuz it's about a buck more in the park. As for taking pictures, I've never seen anywhere in the park NOT to take pictures. Wherever you look you will see beauty. For more info go to: yosemitepark.com and it should answer about anything you need. Feel free to contact me also. Just remember to follow all the safety rules there, don't feed any of the animals, even the squirrels, they can be rabid.

Bring chains, you might need them. Still have another storm coming through. You'll pay a lot more if you buy them in the park. Also, get your gas outside the park, it's cheaper. Have a great time there.

Looks like I will be hiking Half Dome in mid June. There is a new system for permits this year. Over 1600 people applied for the 300 permits for the same day as me. We find out for sure this Friday, but I noticed that the same agency that I paid my application fee too withdrew $10 (permits for two people) from my debit account yesterday. Now I need to get in shape!

I like to tell people planning to go to Yosemite to get a video from your library or wherever so you can see what's to offer there. Take notes on what you want to see. Every year before the season starts I will watch a few of them myself as a refresher course. (I tend to forget stuff in my off season.) My favorite video is a Ken Burns production called "The National parks, Americas best idea." It is a 6 DVD set that shares some great insight and history of our parks. I've already seen it several times but always see something new every time.
