Hi everyone. I'm not a professional but I am definitely more than a hobbyist. I do have clients and do shoots but also do stuff for myself. Anyway, I am looking to get a new lens for my birthday from my husband and I am so torn as to what I want. I KNOW that I want something with length to capture birds/waves/things in the distance. I had been looking at Sigma 150mm 2.8 b/c of great glass and sharpness and bokeh just not sure if that length is a good & useful length. Also had looked at Nikon 18-200 mm b/c of the range but it's only a 3.6-5.6 and I'm not generally crazy about zooms........btw I am shooting on a crop sensor. what do you all have and recommend?

Take a look at the Nikkor AF-S 28-300mm VR II. Its really a wonderful lens, and would yield a 42-450mm walk-around lens on your crop sensor body. A definite bird getter!

I had a 55-300mm but didn't get enough reach from it. I replaced it with a Sigma 150-500mm.
depends on how you will use it. I use my Nikkor 28 to 300mm all the time and only rarely use my 150 to 500mm Sigma lens.

The 55-300mm I had was a kit lens, so that probably was part of the problem. :)

Hey everyone, new to the forums. I'm like Jeni, not a professional (yet) but certainly more than just a hobby. Shooting with a Canon 60D and kit lens (18-135mm) and am ready to buy new glass. I'm looking for a prime lens and have it narrowed down to 2, 50mm f/1.4 USM and 85mm f/1.8 USM. I have read a ton of reviews and am thinking the 85. Is the AF in the 50mm as bad as everyone says? Can you tell me which one you would recommend to a beginner? I would like to be able to use it for portraits and landscapes so I was thinking the 50mm but the AF problem scares me. Thank you!
I have the 50 mm 1.4g and rarely have it off my camera. I LOVE it. Gorgeous bokeh, very crisp lens. Www.jenniferleonardphotography.com if you want to see what it can do.

Great work and website! The lens you mentioned is a Nikon lens no?
Yes it's Nikon. And thank you :)
I also recently purchased the Sigma 150-500 - LOVE IT! I had rented one for a trip to Florida last fall - excellent!

I also have and use the 28-300 as a "walk-around" - love it fo such. However, used it at the 300mm with my D3 for a multirow panorama which had quite a lot of sky - vignetting was horrible in the sky images. Don't know if I did something wrong, if so what, but...
My pano was 80 images and more than half suffered.
The Canon 50mm f1.4 is the one that some reviewers cite the poor autofocus. Maybe try the Sigma? Costs more.
Jenl - maybe you should rent some lenses to decide. Rates are reasonable and can be shipped to you, Google "camera rentals".
PS - really liked your B&W photo of little girl with straw in her mouth. You really captured the eyes!
Thank you John. That's Mu daughter. My favorite picture of her by far!
