Thanks for the info. I have 3 Win 7 Pro systems, so I will probably put Win 10 on one of them and see what happens.

I have a desktop and laptop with Win 7 Home on them. I may upgrade the laptop to Win 10 since about the only thing I do with it is Ugly Hedgehog stuff. If I lose that it doesn't make much difference.

I checked Windows Updates in Control Panel on the laptop and this is what is there. I think I will wait before I do anything.

A saga of the first day of the new system introduction.

Some of the gloom and doom people were correct.
This morning - 1st day of Win 10 rollout - Windows installed crucial updates and restarted broken!

There were several messages that it could not find certain system files - 'may be on a drive that is inaccessible' - well the locations were decided by MS programmers so what have you done with them you stupid **!!!### !!!!!!

The desktop was bare of icons and wallpaper except for an empty trash bin that should have shown full.
The task bar was empty as was most of the the program list.

Found Google Chrome icon and clicked it - 'you expect me to open up, you have got to be kidding me'!!!

Clicked on Windows help - got message that it was having problems (having a melt down like a few million users no doubt) and couldn't find the help files.

So I did what Windows users are familiar with - went back to an earlier restore point where Windows did work (as well as it ever does) and once everything was as it had been before these defective updates - I turned Automatic Updates OFF.

I have too many programs to go over to a Mac and they are not perfect and trouble free.

Are your external speakers plugged into the dock or directly to the laptop?

Docks are sketchy when it comes to compatibility on all the ports.

The speakers were plugged into the dock. I also plugged them into the laptop and I also plugged them into my phone. They didn't work anywhere. The speakers are about 10 years old.

So, I went to the nearest Walmart, paid $12.00 for a new set of speakers, got them home, plugged them in to the dock and they didn't work. I then tried them in the laptop and they did work. So that is what I will do. I really only listen to the local news radio station while I am on the computer, so they are fine.

The biggest issue I have found is that there is no DVD player software included with Windows 10. They tell you that when you try and play a DVD. So, the next project will be to find one cheap or better yet...free.

Are you saying that Bill Gates is so distraught over the sheer growth of Apple that he has created a doomsday WMD to take as many of us out as he can while he hunkers down in his bunker with a bottle of booze a gun and his family?

Bill Gates retired from MS years ago - he is just a stockholder.

The actual download of the Windows 10 system over their upgrade servers to the computer being upgraded takes 5-6 hours, if you manually start the download.

THERE ARE TWO FILES THAT ALLOW YOU TO JUMP THE LINE IF YOU HAVE THE RESERVATION MADE. THE ARE ON THE MICROSOFT WEB SITE. ONE IS "MEDIA CREATER FOR WINDOWS 10" AND "MEDIA CREATER64" FOR 64 BIT.

I used these files to initialize the Windows 10 upgrade immediately... no waiting. The Uprade took 5-6 hours.

The implication of your upgrade is that the actual download took place overnight, and was loaded into the computer, ready for the install. The time you say it takes is consistent with the install after the software for the OS is IN your computer. Sounds right.

Good man.... you slept through the wait!

Well I for one am getting a bit miffed. I'm still trying to download the last security update that turns the insider version into the RTM version.

I finally just said screw it and ran the refresh, figuring I can just install Office 2010 and Adobe CC later. Got home a few minutes ago and the refresh failed.

And the Microsoft rep stopped answering my thread.....

Lol, early adopter blues.

Macs can run Windows programs, you can even boot Windows if you desire, so you can run all your windows programs on a Mac, as well as the Mac programs.

True the Mac OS is not trouble free but, and I use both, the Mac OS is considerably less trouble.

There does not seem to be any widespread report of what you describe. I have been Beta testing for the last three months on five machines and have not had any similar reports (missing system files)....

If I were you, I would try the upgrade again, and make sure you accept all the defaults. Usually, lost file problems are the result of designating a detachable drive or other partition for file storage.

I would be interested to hear your continuing story...
