I would say that is misleading, but typical today for many of todays ISP's unfortunately.

His response when you asked about the charge should have been, "no charge for changing the speed, however there will of course be an increase in your monthly bill of $$ to have that increased speed, is that OK?"

I think you nailed it.
The question, as asked, can be interpreted two ways, and the answer can, also.
Another example demonstrating that a slightly longer (more words) question, while seeming pedantic, can avoid confusion.

And finally the monopoly for cable service is about to go the way of the dodo bird in the Quad-Cities. Up to now, we have had Mediacom and a substandard Century-Link.

Now Century-Link is beginning an expansion and will provide fiber optic cable to the home. A group from Geneseo, IL is going to start offering fiber optic cable to the home and is also testing a hight-speed area WiFi system.

Mediacom has a huge fixed investment.

We are moving to an area that will have the Century-Link fiber. Mediacom will not install infrastructure until the neighborhood is all built. Since the will not pre install, they are out of my consideration.

TV will probably be over the air (10-12 HD channels available), with a small selection of other channels as this segment of the industry evolves into selective subscription services. I hate paying for 150+ channels when, when I watch 8-10.

I got fed up with Charter TV's terrible service, and cut the cord 18 months, got digital antenna for free HD local programing, and pay a fraction of what I used to for Netflix and Amazon Prime. My (movie) costs went down from $120 per month to less than $20. Content selection is way better, and NO more stinking commercials. Win on ALL fronts for me. Pay Charter only for INternet service. They're not good for anything else.

Good move on your part - I am heading the same direction, but for TV an antenna is not gonna cut it - too far from the stations, so will look for a dish/direct TV deal.

I've been with both of them twice. No better than anybody else. Try to get an exact monthly total out of them after you cut through all the b.s. Again, get an exact amount and hold them to it. Find out if it's 12 or 24 months before they screw you again.

Years ago, we had DirectTV with a dish and two receivers. We did that because the cable did not get the network stations. Our neighbor's tree was right at the limit of where the dish wanted to point. It would probably be well above that now. It wasn't unusual to get bad reception for heavy clouds or bad weather. Maybe transmission/reception is better now.

What's really strange is that I had to bring our DirectTV receivers to be recycled. Each one operated with a card that was unique to us. No one else could use those receivers. If we didn't use them, they were garbage.

Good luck with your transition. You will be much happier once you get it sorted out. Depending on how far you are from a main transmission point, some of the exterior mounted HD digital antennas pick up channels 50 - to 100 miles away, but results vary.

I,ve had both Dish and Directv. I worked at Directv many years ago. Both satalite broadcasters have a modest fee for local channels; around $5 perhaps. You just have to find their best no-frills minimum package to "bolt" it on to. They,re constantly shuffling their programming offerings. I think the most basic service used to be in the range of around $30 to $50 for Dish and DTV. Might be different now. Good luck.

Both provide local programming now at no extra charge in my area. I'm not going in to a dissertation except to say that tell them exactly what you want and get a quote. Guaranteed that you'll get evasive answers and half truths and no quote that you can hold them to. Another thing, if you think that you know how to read, wait to you try to decipher your charges online or in a hard copy bill.

My next deal will be to shit can the TV and listen more to NPR on the radio. I've got 200 plus channels and at any given time there is nothing worth watching. Crap programming, pay TV, info-mertials duplicate programs and here's the real beauty: I'm such a dumb ass that I pay to watch commercials. Not bad enough that I get my brains screwed out, I pay to watch commercials. Usually 20 plus minutes in a 60 minute program. At some point you won't be able to tape and than fast forward thru them.

So much for no dissertation. Pay TV sucks.

Please don't ask me how I really feel. Too stupid to answer....

I called my internet provider (Century Link). This was the conversation:

Me: I was wondering if it was possible to increase my internet speed.
Him: Yes, you can increase from 4 to 15.
Me: Great. What is the cost of that?
Him: There is no charge.
Me: Wonderful! Go ahead and do it please.

My son was in the room and while I was on hold, he suggested that there probably was a charge to increase it and I should ask what the additional would be on my bill. The "no charge" apparently applies to the guy answering the phone then typing in the changes. The increase was actually a little over $60 a month.

I told the guy I thought that was misleading, but his English was not good and he didn't understand my comment.

What do you think? Am I being picky? Or was this deliberately misleading.

No, you're not being picky. If you ever get to speak w/ a real English speaking person, try to see if they'll upgrade to 10 or 12. It should be cheaper than $60 one would think.
