Misleading?

I called my internet provider (Century Link). This was the conversation:

Me: I was wondering if it was possible to increase my internet speed.
Him: Yes, you can increase from 4 to 15.
Me: Great. What is the cost of that?
Him: There is no charge.
Me: Wonderful! Go ahead and do it please.

My son was in the room and while I was on hold, he suggested that there probably was a charge to increase it and I should ask what the additional would be on my bill. The "no charge" apparently applies to the guy answering the phone then typing in the changes. The increase was actually a little over $60 a month.

I told the guy I thought that was misleading, but his English was not good and he didn't understand my comment.

What do you think? Am I being picky? Or was this deliberately misleading.

I would say that is misleading, but typical today for many of todays ISP's unfortunately.

His response when you asked about the charge should have been, "no charge for changing the speed, however there will of course be an increase in your monthly bill of $$ to have that increased speed, is that OK?"

Companies ought to be required to have native English speaking employees answering phones in this country.

Welcome to what we have become in this great country of opportunity and exploitation. Most want to put their hand in our pockets.

I see this almost every day. "Free Download" of a program that costs $100 to buy.

So, this guy was saying there's no charge to make the switch, but he didn't tell you that after making the switch, you would be charged another $60 a month. That's worth reporting to your state fraud department.

If the guy can't understand English and speak it, then the company should not hire him to talk to English-speaking customers. My son's runs into the "problem with English" every day in retail sales. As soon as a sale is not going their way, people who did not grow up speaking English all of a sudden can't understand. They know the sale items and the coupons and the various discounts, but if they have to pay more than they think they should - their English all of a sudden isn't very good.

Actually there is a similar law in place. But it is India. I was involved in setting international locations for a number of years and was amazed to find out we couldn't send calls to our Dehli offices to our global call center in Brussels.

BUT, it was FREE to download right? No false advertising there for sure ;)

Well, wait, it really was not free since you pay for your internet access monthly, so yes, they lied!

:)

In all my personal business dealings over the past ten years, the only times I felt purposely mislead was in dealing with cable and cell phone providers.

I would have to add electric company carriers here in Ct. The AG finally had to step in and help a little.

I got a call one day and the man, in heavy Indian accent, asked if my wife was available. I said yes she is but I was not going to put her on the phone. When he asked why, I told him that she didn't know anyone with an accent like his. Of course, he hung up. I was a little disappointed. I was going to have some fun with him.

I hate it when they ask for someone by their first name, as if it's a friend calling. If I don't recognize the caller ID, I pick up the phone and hang up immediately.

There's a Broadband provider in the UK called TalkTalk I also get my mobile phone from then. I decided to get a new phone and sent the old one back and they acknowledged receipt then I found they were charging me for both phones and insisted I had not sent the old phone back. Uk users beware,

I don't know how the cable companies get away with their fraudulent advertising - "Only $49.95 a month" (for the first 12 months.... ) then the price doubles!
