Thanks, yes. But can you tell it to back up one external drive to another? If so, then that is my solution.

Any backup unit you buy directly from Apple will be preformatted to work perfectly with your Mac...it's just a matter of plugging it into the computer with the supplied cord. Yes, all new Macs have Time Machine pre-installed. Backing up is as simple as connecting the drive, and the backup will automatically start. Be prepared for the initial backup to take several hours. Subsequent backups will likely take only a few minutes. I own the LaCie Porsche Design 1Tb backup drive and am very pleased with it. I think it cost ~$80 at the Apple Store.

I prefer the LaCie drive over Time Capsule because it is much less expensive, and because it is very small and lightweight...literally fits into a shirt pocket. If I am leaving my home and computer unattended while on vacation, I can easily take the backup with me.

+1 on the Lacie 3 tb, plug into the thunderbolt port and answer a few questions and then forget you have it.

No such thing as a dumb question, and people here are very generous with their help. If there is someone who does know everything, I would like to both congratulate them and meet them.

I also have an iMac. Be sure to differentiate between hard drives that CAN be used with an Apple computer and ones that are MADE to be used with an Apple computer. I have WD My Book for Mac, 3 TB, currently on sale at BestBuy for $113.99, 4.6/ 5 rating from 241 reviews. 4TB model, same manufacturer, currently on sale at BestBuy for $129.99, 4.7/5 rating, 1080 reviews. More models, also on sale, with a variety of specifications and system requirements.

I find them to be very user friendly and nearly impossible to screw up.

I just picked up a 1 TB Seagate Slim for Mac to use when I travel... $60 at Best Buy. I think I will get either the Apple Time Capsule or the Thunderbolt external drive for backup at home.

I ordered an iMac and was looking at these units for backup storage. Input appreciated for anyone already using one of these.

AirPort Time Capsule - 2TB - $300 ($100 more for 3 TB)

G-Technology 3TB G-DRIVE with Thunderbolt External Hard Drive - $300

ioSafe 3TB Solo G3 Fireproof/Waterproof Hard Drive - $350)

Seagate 2TB Backup Plus Slim for Mac Portable Hard Drive - $120

Here's my dumb question: Does the Time Machine Backup software come already installed on a new computer?

Time Machine comes installed on all Apple machines with Intel chips, but you must designate what files, folders etc you want it to back up.

I got it with 16 GB with the idea that I can add another 16 when I need it.

I thought the money was better spent to increase the processor to i7

It doesn't work that way. 16GB from Apple = 4 4GB chips;
32GB = 4 8GB chips. You'll have to trade in your memory to buy the 4 8 GB chips in the future.. Your best bet is to order it with 8GB of memory, then buy your 32GB from OWC. Keep the 2 4GB chips in case you ever have to send the machine in to Apple for warranty work.

I like that idea, plus it is wireless. That's why I ordered my iMac with both keyboard and mouse as wireless. If I really miss the number pad, I can always get the extended keyboard.

So, it backs up your ENTIRE hard drive? How about just documents and pictures? Or is it best to just do a total backup? :?

Time Machine backs up deleted folders of data, Not your applications. To back up your complete drive you'd want a separate external hd and either SuperDuper or CarbonCopyCloner. They are both full back up programs. The paid versions can be set up to do scheduled back ups and other tricks. The free one will do a back up once when requested. Both will make a bootable backup, which is important.

I will probably use both. The pocket version to keep with me in case some tragedy befalls everything at home. The LaCie comes in a 1 or 2 TB. I read some bad reviews about that brand.

You'll find bad reviews on every product on the market. The real question is, how truthful are the reviews? Or are they posted by someone with an "axe to grind"?

The data at "https://www.backblaze.com/blog/best-hard-drive/" is based on tens of thousands of drives' performance and failure rate. Companies like Google and Backblaze are in an ideal position to acquire data on hard drives and their reported results should mean something to anyone who is concerned about hard drive reliability.
The problem with buying a packaged drive with a brand name like LaCie or even Apple is that you don't know what drive mechanism is inside. It may not be the same for the same model over time. If you buy a drive based on reliability and put it in an enclosure you have more control, especially if you base your choice choice of drive on data from mega-users.
If nothing else, check the warranty for different drives. 5 year is the maximum you'll find and usually reflects the manufacturer's confidence in their product.

I have both the 2 TB Time Capsule and a 2 TB USB 3 Seagate drive.

My Macs back up to the Time Capsule on a regular basis and use the USB 3 drive for backup when I'm on the road.

Another GREAT feature you get with the Time Capsule is AC WiFi - I'm sitting here connected at 867 Mbps. Price out an AC WiFi router and then add that to the price of a decent network storage/backup device and you'll find the Time Capsule to be a pretty decent value.

Nope, Time Machine makes system backups. I can network boot from the Time Capsule and do a complete system restore from any of the backup points.

If you visit the Genius Bar at a Apple Store, either the ER or Intensive Care for Macs, you will see the techs working the counter using Lacie Rugged portable hard drives. If Lacie hard drives are prone to failure or not reliable, I can't imagine the Apple techs using equipment that is not dependable or reliable.
I have always understood that Lacie puts hard drives in an enclosure and brands them, the excerpt if from a reply to a message board about who Lacie uses as sources for the hard drives
Thank you for your email. We use a few different manufacturers,
so we would not be able to tell you which drives go to which item
(except the 500GB drives which are Hitachi). In general we do use
Western Digital, Seagate, and we did use Maxtor before they were bought
by Western Digital. For DVDs, we use Samsung.

Oh if you remove the orange bumpers or protection from a Lacie Rugged hard drive it should be small enough to fit in a pocket.

It's always good to go large. You can't buy too much of a hard drive but you can go too small. As far as brand name I don't know about the Apple but that being said Seagate makes one of the best hard drives made. My wife use to work for them and they put a lot into their drives. Good luck with your new Mac. I always back up to my backup and when I get enough new files I backup to a DVD too to be sure I am covered. That's just the way I roll..

I have a 3TB GDrive RAID unit similar to what you are looking at. I went for the RAID unit for added redundancy. It comes as RAID 0 but is easily configured as RAID 1, so my 6TB unit ends up with 3 TB. Not sure if this in your price line.

Time Capsule is pretty easy to operate, backs up hourly automatically and works great. I also have a LaCie Rugged Thunderbolt 2TB, just to provide an additional safety net for my music, videos and photos. I have a MacBook Pro Retina.
