I ordered an iMac and was looking at these units for backup storage. Input appreciated for anyone already using one of these.

AirPort Time Capsule - 2TB - $300 ($100 more for 3 TB)

G-Technology 3TB G-DRIVE with Thunderbolt External Hard Drive - $300

ioSafe 3TB Solo G3 Fireproof/Waterproof Hard Drive - $350)

Seagate 2TB Backup Plus Slim for Mac Portable Hard Drive - $120

Here's my dumb question: Does the Time Machine Backup software come already installed on a new computer?

Time machine is included in the OS, and it can use the thunderbolt drive as a destination for backups. So the 3TB Thunderbold drive seems like the best deal.

BTW, you would be well invested to increase the RAM to at least 16, but I would go to 32 MEG for serious photography editing.

I got it with 16 GB with the idea that I can add another 16 when I need it.

I thought the money was better spent to increase the processor to i7

I would suggest large capacity drive with the fastest connection for your backup. G-Technology 3TB G-DRIVE with Thunderbolt External Hard Drive would be my suggestion. The added benefit is the quality build and dependability of G-Tech drives.

I have an iMac and a Time Capsule. Time Machine that comes with the iMac computers is the software and is already installed.
Time Machine automatically backs up your hard drive to Time Capsule so once you have it set up you don't have to worry about it any more.

I like that idea, plus it is wireless. That's why I ordered my iMac with both keyboard and mouse as wireless. If I really miss the number pad, I can always get the extended keyboard.

So, it backs up your ENTIRE hard drive? How about just documents and pictures? Or is it best to just do a total backup? :?

I also have the wireless keyboard and mouse.
I don't know if you can limit it to only backing up certain items, but I think it's a good idea to back everything up. That way if you have some sort of problem you can go back to before the problem and restore everything from there.
When you bought your computer or Time Capsule did you also get one to one? If so see them about it, because I can tell that I'm not doing a job explaining it. Maybe someone here on the Hog can help too.

Any backup unit you buy directly from Apple will be preformatted to work perfectly with your Mac...it's just a matter of plugging it into the computer with the supplied cord. Yes, all new Macs have Time Machine pre-installed. Backing up is as simple as connecting the drive, and the backup will automatically start. Be prepared for the initial backup to take several hours. Subsequent backups will likely take only a few minutes. I own the LaCie Porsche Design 1Tb backup drive and am very pleased with it. I think it cost ~$80 at the Apple Store.

I prefer the LaCie drive over Time Capsule because it is much less expensive, and because it is very small and lightweight...literally fits into a shirt pocket. If I am leaving my home and computer unattended while on vacation, I can easily take the backup with me.

Yes, I did get the one to one. I thought I might need it since I have never owned a Mac before.

I will probably use both. The pocket version to keep with me in case some tragedy befalls everything at home. The LaCie comes in a 1 or 2 TB. I read some bad reviews about that brand.

As a longtime Mac user, I can tell you that 1 to 1 is a great program, and terrific for the Mac newbie!

My new LaCie drive is the second one I've owned (outgrew the old one), and seems to word perfectly. The folks at the Apple Store (sales + genius) like both the LaCie and Seagate drives, and say that they rarely have returns of either. The LaCie was truly a snap to begin using...literally just plugged it in and Time Machine began a backup?

Yes, the iMac will have the software included. The Time Capsule is also a great way to create your wi-fi network. Just follow the set-up instructions and you will be ready to go. The extra hundred for the 3tb storage is well worth the cost.

Good to know. I did check out all the suggestions on the apple site. Thank you :D
