I also have the D5300. First bought the Sigma 10-20 and liked it, but very quickly upgraded to the Tokina 11-16 version II, the one with the focus motor. Great build quality and it delivers beautiful wide angle images. I've done extensive research and, for me, it was the best wide angle lens choice. It even works on full frame to a limited extent.

Others here have recommended taking along a P&S too. Probably a good idea. You can pick up a refurb long zoom for peanuts and cover the range beyond 300mm.

There is a Sigma 8-16mm that is very highly regarded and wider than the rest.

I've had my eye on the reviews for this lens for a bit... Thinking of adding it to my arsenal!

Truly excellent lens with surprisingly little distortion.

The Tokina 11-16 is a great lens. However, like many of their multi-coated offerings, it is prone to flare and some distortion when used at widest setting-this is typical of most wide angle lenses. See photo taken at 11mm. I can not tell you how it compares with the others in your list.

Personally, would opt for a larger aperture and widest option considering it is going to be a 1.5 crop. I would want that for city scenes, and landscapes shot hand held.

I have a Sigma 10-20 f/4-5.6 HSM that I like very much. It's very sharp with good contrast. The one potential problem is noticeable barrel distortion at 10mm. It goes away by 12mm and you can correct it in PP if it bothers you.

The Tokina lenses don't all have the focus motor you need. If you go for a Tokina make sure that it has the motor. I'm not sure about the Tamron. The older Tamrons don't all have the motor, so check before buying one.

The Sigma does have the motor. I use mine with a D5500 and a D5200. Any Sigma HSM lens has the motor.

I also suggest bringing a good compact camera as a back-up and for those times that you don't want to bring the DSLR.

I will speak of the Sigma 10-20 and agree with MarkD about it. It is a good lens and it is built well. Images are sharp. It is easy to get vignetting 10mm with any filters. I prefer 12mm with the lens. I pland to shoot star trails with the lens Aug 14.

I would get the sigma 10-20 if it was good enough for Thom hogan
To put on his camera and leave it there . And put his 12-24 nikon away in a box on a shelf . The sigma should be good enough for what ever .
The tokena is good also . But you could get a bad copy . Like buying a car made on Friday .

and that extra two points in wide 10 versus 12 . when I use mine it's never
On 12 always on 10 mm and hardly ever on 20 mm 2 mm make a difference

I would get the one that's $45,200 just so I could brag that I have it.
I would put it on the camera and never take it off.
I would also permanently carry the camera with me whether I need it or not.
Kinda like wearing a 5 carat diamond ring!!!
Anyway, that's just what I would do!!!!!
Your welcome!

If I could afford a $45,200 lens, I wouldn't care what advice anybody else had ;-)

But I highly recommend the Tokina 11-16 f2.8. It has served me well on my D7100 and D7200. fast and sharp, especially at f4 and about 13mm.

I have th 14 - 24 Nikon and I can tell you that it is one of the sharpest lenses in my bag. Including a 85mm 1.4!

I would go with that lens for a lot more than landscapes, but your camera will hold you back a little. Hook a D810 on that baby and it unbeatable.

I have a Tokina 16-28mm F2.8 that worked very well on a recent trip to Paris and Normandy. Purchased at B&H for $549.00.
