Here's how I would advise you:
Having lived there for ten years and traveled most of the island as an avid photographer, I had everything. Including, and especially, a 20mm lens (35mm film then) which I would take on any trip. Long lens for puffin pics, is a good idea. Don't fall off a cliff.
Look at Wikipedia article on St.John's if you haven't already. Some sample pics there. Expect rain. Take appropriate protective gear. Baggies work. Lots of examples of what to look for in Flickr if you search on "Newfoundland." If you like fog pics, you may have some opportunities.
Newfoundland and Labrador Tourist board has a web site with lots of ideas (videos!) on stuff to see and how to do it.
Just remember: so special, it has its own time zone - one half hour later in Newfoundland. Not to mention speech. Pick up the "Dictionary of Newfoundland English."
["How do you get twenty-five Newfoundlanders in a Volkswagen Beetle? Ask them if they want a ride to Toronto."]
My advice.

With your 18 - 200 you have everything from mid wide angle scenics to an equivalent 300 mm covered. The 28 - 300 is significantly bigger, and doesn't give you that much more length - and you loose the wide angle. I find the 18 - 200 Nikon is a very useful general purpose lens and rarely comes off my Nikon.

Would be an easy choice for me, I take 'em all!

That wasn't one of his options!!
Hmmmm..., thanks Swede!
He said, "suggestions"!!
I didn't realize it had to come from his list. That's a pretty short list to not just take the all!!!
I was erring on the side of caution. What if he finds himself smack, dab in the middle of a flock of PUFFINS?!?! Then what?
The ONLY thing I've ever heard of anybody shooting in NF is PUFFUNS!!!!
So, I stand by my recommendation..., a 600mm f4!!!!
SS
PS, the 18-200 and the 50!
The 300 is no better than 200 when it comes to puffins!!!!
Thanks guys after reading all the suggestions I settled on 50-1.8 28-75 18-200 Thanks again

When I was travelling anywhere, and packing for weight was a factor, I found the 18-200 with the 50 1.8 in my pocket, was a great combo.
But only if you have either a good 18-200 with no lens creep or the mk2 with a lens lock button. The drooping lens was so annoying, I sold my first 18-200 to buy the mk2 and still have it and use it on the D7100.
Strangely tho, I get better results with it on my D300s than I do with the D7100.
For travelling, that extra width to 18mm was so handy (and did save my feet a few extra steps) :)
When I was travelling anywhere, and packing for we... (

My 18-200 Nikor VRII is my goto lens. For traveling I take it, my f1.8 35mm and my rokonon 8mm. Exceptions like airshows take a longer lens (400mm+2X TC [really cuts the light down, but that's not too bad a problem at an airshow])

I think that is a good combination and it wont break your back to carry. Show some pictures when you get them.
