think of video features as being like the nail file in a swiss army knife, most wont ever use it, but some will. I picture the swiss army camera. pulls out a clamp to keep the flowers you are shooting from moving, a bottle opener, a spare polarizer in case you forgot yours, and a semi automatic pistol to prevent punks from stealing your camera.

I never shoot video, but having that function available doesn't bug me at all. There is always the chance that something unexpected will occur that will make me glad to have it. As far as paying extra because of it, unlikely. It's a function of the firmware and merely makes use of the existing hardware. Do you make use of every single function available on your camera? I would bet not, and I would bet that having those functions doesn't bother you. Why should video capability be any different? Do you think it makes you look like less of a "photographer" because your camera has the function?
GPS? Both of my Canons have it and I rarely use it. Some people use it all the time. I would imagine that it does add some cost, but not enough that I am going to worry about it. If you don't want to pay for it, then there are plenty of fine cameras available without it.

So you are saying that the video function is basically just a bunch of still photos taken in sequence using still functions and just stringing them together makes if "video". That would make sense, but when I see a video camera it is so totally different looking, form follows function and the technology is assumably very different than a DSLR.I don't think I have ever seen or heard of a prize still photo taken out of a video stream.

I don't use wifi. Have no devices for it. No cell phone either. Don't need it. Video don't care. My videos would look worse then the Blair Witch movie. My D-750 has both. Yup also has gps. Don't care about that either. Half the time I don't know where I'm at anyway. Don't care much one way or the other if the camera has video, gps, or wifi or not. Use it or not. Nice to have those options though. Might as well throw in the tilt screen. Don't use that either. Might one day use some or all of those nasty extra's or not. Nice to know you have it though. If I did get a cell phone it would have to be a "Jitterbug".

This discussion brought back an old memory.

I believe it may be a generational thing.
My Dad grew up in the depression. His favorite places to shop were the Salvation Army, Goodwill & any second store he spotted.
He did not place a value on his time. If it took a month to fix something out of used stuff and spend no money then he was ahead of the game.

Back in the early ‘80’s, he only had access to satellite TV reception where he lived but he needed a new TV.
He was almost to the point of being belligerent with the salesman because he only needed a TV that received channel 3.
He was not about to lay out his hard earned money for all of those extra channels like 2, 4-110 & UHF.
It was almost impossible to get him to accept the fact that he could not have his way.
He ended up buying a used TV at a reasonable price, with all of the channels, but needed some minor repairs.
He thought he screwed the seller out of them at no extra cost to him.

He figured, if you were lucky enough to have good quality things, you took care of them and they would last you a lifetime.
He’s gone now. He would have a very difficult time living in this disposable world mentality.

Here is my question: WHY would anyone want a "movie" function on a still camera ? or a Wi-Fi function ? If I had any need for a movie, I would buy a movie camera or a video camera.
It "bugs" me no end, when buying a still camera and having to pay for a movie camera for which I have NO NEED.

As a full time business pro photographer, I have never used the video function. But, I use wifi to my ipad to enlarge the shot, so that I can check details rather than to count on the little 3" LCD monitor.

I use both still and video (If you have active grandkids you would understand). How convenient it is to have both together!

Do not think of it as paying for functions that you are not using. I am an Electrical/Electronic Engineer. I can state with authority that is it easier to include extra functions on all camera models than it would be to have many different permutations with different configurations...And most importantly, they would not be much, if any, cheaper without what is incorporated on the operational chipsets. So, even if you didn't get those functions, you would still pay as much for your hardware.....

If you don't want to use a function, just ignore it.

DoF is a function of f-stop and sensor size, would you believe the smaller aperture lets less light in, which is why the optical view finder gets dimmer..

That is what happens when you have an optical viewfinder, but I'm sure some imaginative programmer could come up with a virtual representation of DoF without dimming the electronic viewfinder. Anyway, that was just an example of what could be done by changing the video button to a programmable button.

Alyn, I have never used the video in either my Canon 5ll or the 7ll but I know both have a very fine video.
BUT, I would also NEVER buy a camera that did not have video.
I have plans to use it, some day!!

Why don't you get yourself a Nikon Df. It has video but just NO way to turn it on!! Would THAT make you feel better?!?!

On the video issue I agree completely. Been lamenting this since the release of the D90. I would add the scene modes to the unwanted features.

Some think it comes free and is just a matter of tweaking the firmware but that just isn't so. There is a lot of research and design work involved and engineers don't work for peanuts.

I had great expectations for the Nikon DF but it was a big disappointment considering the price. Low pixel count, awkward controls and ridicules price. Why couldn't they just utilize existing components and capitalize on the economy of scale.

I'm waiting for a FF high res, mirror-less, global electronic shutter camera that uses Nikon lenses. Probably not likely in my life time.

On the other hand WiFi has some utility. Its nice to be able to control the camera remotely.

That's what you pay for having less features. So that's the reason that most cameras have lots of features because they are cheaper on the economy of scale. Nikon can only sell few Df and that's why they have to sell it for a high price. Those who bought it don't complain.
