Photoshop cs5 costs over $600. The salesmen were willing to sell me a cs5 school edition for $200. The only requirement for using this software is that I had to be a teacher. Well, I teach chess to the under 12 year old group. Am I qualified to use this school edition software?

I bought the whole darn shooting match from Adobe for about $2,500... very painful but necessary. I have spent more time in Photoshop since it first came to Adobe via the Knoll brothers than brain surgeons do in school plus studying. Maybe not quite so technical, but what you can do with Photoshop reminds me of the film "The Stunt Man." There was a great line: "If God could do what we can do, he'd be a happy man."

I think you'll probably have to produce a school ID card.

Yes you'll need a student ID and possibly more. Go to the Adobe webpage it will give you the requirements. I purchased the CS5 Photoshop only version for about $600 because that's all I could afford at the time and it was absolutely necessary to do the job right. If I had the cash I would have got the full suite.

If your not teaching at a recognized educational institute it is unlikely you will qualify.

Why not live up to Adobe's intent? Do the right thing.

My daughter just purchased the PHXS CS5 and she is a full time student at OSU. She had to provide her ID Card by email or fax for it to ship. And to install she had to provide her ID information again at the time of installation. You have to be a teacher of college or school with an ID to purchase it.

I just got an email from Adobe yesterday or the day before. They're running a special right now on CS5. Only $299. That's not too much more than the student version without having to be a student. But are you going to take advantage of the added features enough to make it a worthwhile purchase over PSe9?

It is expensive to initially "buy in," but here's a perfectly legal and acceptable workaround: Buy an older version of Photoshop for cheap. Then, you can legitimately upgrade to 5 for $199. Adobe usually allows upgrades from two versions back (check that to make sure it is still correct!) Then, keep fairly current on your upgrades--don't fall out of the inner circle or you are beginning anew on pricing!

I don't comprehend the Adobe philosophy. If I were to purchase a $300,000 home the realty company would not ask if I knew how to cut grass or if I knew how to paint walls. Why does Adobe place restrictions on the people that buy their product? If a person buys their product and does not meet their qualifications, the purchaser gets a dud CD in which he cannot get his money back. In essence, Adobe stole $200. from the purchaser simply because he didn't meet their qualifications. If this is such a big deal for Adobe, they could have explained the circumstances before the purchase took place.

Archangel - I think your perception of Adobe's intent is incorrect. I would be surprised if Adobe is even slightly concerned with your technical prowess. They just want you to board the upgrade train.

I don't really care what Adobe thinks of my expertise. The upgrade train sounds really bad, but normal for software companies. Adobe has gone a step further. They have thrown out software to be purchased and then when the purchaser doesn't meet their qualifications, they stick him with a CD that doesn't work. And please, don't ask for a refund.

updates are a pain, but it is the way of the digital world.
Very few software companies offer free upgrades.

This is one of the hidden cost of the digtial world.

I have missed the point your making about the cd. Old version of PS work, and many people have been using older version for years and they are perfecly happy.

There is a problem if you do want to upgrade after several versions, but I know several companies that don't even provide that as an option.

Softare is expensive and companies are protecting their assest. Adobe is very generous with their educational discounts (as an aside I don't qualify)
