I'm not upgrading. I wanted a cd of cs5 student edition. I could have purchased one for $200.00. If I would have I would not have met their criteria for being a proper owner. I would not have found out this info until after purchasing the software. Because I didn't pass photoshop's muster I would not have been able to use the cd. I could not get a refund because Photoshop does not refund a cd with a broken celophane cover.
Am I the only one out there with this problem?

Why not live up to Adobe's intent? Do the right thing.

If you want to sell software to the public, then do it and quit horsing around.

Ah, I see. the middle man wasn't clear. I had something similar happen to me, however, I knew about the qualification process and asked the seller . They told me no problem, however, since the school where I teach is an art center I didn't qualify. Luckly, the seller took it back as they gave me the wrong information.

I registered for a PS class at Adult Ed for $5 and got it for under $200 with the student ID.

Photoshop cs5 costs over $600. The salesmen were willing to sell me a cs5 school edition for $200. The only requirement for using this software is that I had to be a teacher. Well, I teach chess to the under 12 year old group. Am I qualified to use this school edition software?

I don't believe there are any radical qualifications. You're a teacher and you must have an ID of some sort to photocopy and send to them. I believe Adobe will even allow the institutional discount to an elementary school child with proof they are a student.

I'd say Adobe uses this as a marketing strategy like Joe Cool the Camel was used for cigarettes. If they can get students touching and using PhotoShop (actually any of their software) first and before any other brand, and get teachers showing it to students and fellow teachers because they got it for a really nice price, they've created a whole slew of loyal followers - possibly for life. Smart word of mouth viral marketing at it's best!

Music transcription software companies do this too. If you are a student or teacher you can buy Sibilius or Finale full versions (typically $600+) for about $125 to $150. Once you are hooked they know you won't change over to a competitor because the program is too hard to learn for users to throw that knowledge away and start over.

It took awhile, but I found it. I would expect this info to be more widely known. I don't believe Adobe is doing us any favors.

I looked the student addition before buying at full price and I could have easily purchased it using my daughters student I'd. I did my du diligence and read Adobe's criteria and it was pretty plain to me so I ponied up the cash and I'm happy I did. I think you may be barking up the wrong tree in this forum with a complaint like this. Just because you teach kids Chess does not make you teacher in the educational system.

That's correct. I don't claim to be a teacher by Adobes standards.
I'm happy to say I didn't purchase a teacher version as Adobe would not have permitted me to use it. Also they would not have given me my $200. back because I broke the seal on the CD. I would have been out the money and not have a working CD through no fault of my own.

I found out something else that's really interesting. For every student edition they sell the government gives them $400.00. Of course that extra $400. is my money taken in taxes. My money is good enough for photoshop but my credentials are not.
I'd say it was all rather insulting.
