Those are awesome Tony. I have an SX50 and obviously don't totally understand what I am doing. Especially like the Lotus flower. How did you do that, if you don't mind me asking??

I am impressed. I bought a SX50 over two years ago. I think I have used it briefly only two times. I got it to take to places like when I go kayaking or on long hikes. Haven't really done any of that lately so I continue to learn my Canon 6D with my L lenses. Looks like you are getting as good of shots with your camera as I do with mine with a 1001x400 lens. Keep it up.
An outstanding series Tony! You certainly have your camera figured out! Kudos for some great shots......

Hi Kathy,
Thanks for looking and especially for your kind comments. First, the short and convenient answer.
This Lotus Flower was shot using Manual Mode.
1. Most importantly you need to have a lighting condition that presents a stark sunlight & shadow contrast to begin with. This flower was very well lit, yet the background was fairly dark, for example.
2. I Use very fast shutter speeds for most all of my shots whether or not the subject is static or in motion. In this image the shutter speed was 1/800s! Aperture f/8 and ISO80. When I'm not using Manual Mode, I use negative Exposure Compensation to further darken the background to help create the look I favor in my photography, which is clearly toward the darker end of the spectrum!
3. In post all you need to do is lower the LEVELS (I use Photoshop Elements 12) until everything except the flower goes completely black!
The long answer is available by clicking on my Profile here and then on to my website, which opens with my Canon SX50 Gallery. Most importantly, on my Homepage be sure to click on "Browse" then "Folders" (PhotoGalleries) and read my "Canon SX50 Hints & Tips" and 'My General Approach To Photography." Doing so will explain exactly how I use my SX50 and how to get a final result like the Lotus Flower.

Hi Patrick,
Thanks for your comments!
What helped me the most with my SX50 was choosing a particular style of photography I could really embrace. I strongly favor portrait style photographs of birds and wildlife and because of this I have a clearly defined goal in mind every time I use the camera. With a consistent game plan to follow I can continually work toward improving my skills. I find the SX50 especially excellent for portrait style bird & wildlife photography.
