Sorry but it was right hand on the right and left hand thread on the left

See, I told you it was confusing. :D

Do you mean the left when you're facing the car or when you're sitting inside? :D

I have a similar problem with a third-party off-camera coil cord. I did lubricate it (which helped) and I took a silver Sharpie and marked the direction to unscrew the connection so I'd never turn it the wrong way.

They should do that with switches "O" for On and "O" for Off. :D

Kinda like flammable and inflammable.

Right and left is always when sitting in the drivers seat that is the standard rule

Even in England? What about "near side" and "off side"? :D

Just because you move the steering wheel does not mean that your right side now becomes your left side

But in the USA, it's the opposite, since the curb is on our right side - the side without the driver.

You might have a point there. I guess that's why ships have port and starboard - no confusion.

Jerry, You sure started somethingreally confusing!!!
Thanks to those who tried seriously to help. I hope it works.
And FYI, Looking from the camera back, as one would naturally, I think for this function turning to the right should be correct. And a white printed arrow in the appropriate directon would help. CANON ARE YOU LISTENING????

My Canon loaned to my daughter with 580 EX flash attached. When returned I could not remove the flash. The adjustment knob will not turn either way so I cannot loosen for removal of the flash. Much "finger" pressure applied but will not budge. Suggestions please.

I'm a little confused. Canon hasn't used a screw based knob on their flashes for years. To undo a Canon flash you have to push and hold a release button then slide the tightening/untightening lever. Is this a really old flash?

There is a difference between the ex and exII as the pic above should show.

From the back of the camera (the side of the flash that says 580 EX not the front side with the red filter panel) you want the lock wheel to turn to the right, so that it moves upwards away from the camera and towards the flash.

I have both 580 EX II and 580 EX flash units and have literally checked my 580 EX in the last couple of minutes.

I know that you are frustrated, but it isn't that hard to slow down and visually see which way to turn the screw to loosen the attachment to the hot shoe.

Is it even possible that the flash has been mounted backwards?

Good luck.

Mine is the 580 EX as pictured and it is several years old....and still going great......just stubborn to release when over tightened.

So did you manage to get it released successfully?
