I knew when I saw the subject that there would be a virulent response. He asked 2 questions. One about the lens, the other about the seller. The lens question was pretty much ignored (I suspect he considered it the more important of the two) and the 42nd street question got the same reaction one always hears when this place is mentioned. Whenever I want to be entertained with over the top remarks I always look for "42nd street" or "Nikon vs Canon".

It amused me that while everyone was happy to smack down the store, noone bothered to tell the poster that he had failed to perform the basic research on product and seller.

Isn't posting his question on this forum part of his basic research?

I'm surprised no one has asked what camera will be used with the lens. Or does that really matter? Well, as long as the OP get the correct lens mount, of course.

I admitt it is quick, fun and more satisfying to stir up a live discussion but questions of this nature are better handled by a quick use of the UHH search function and would leave more room for important questions.

When I was in the Army and stationed in New York City, I found that a lot of stores on 42nd St. were junk stores, that the merchandise was way below good quality. All the guys that I knew called them "gyp joints." If you buy from 42nd St. Photo, you will in ALL likelyhood feeled swindled with the deal. B & H are much better to deal with, and I think you'll feel better with their service than 42nd St. Good luck with your photography!

try www.greentoe.com

I've saved about $200 buying a tripod and a camera using them.

Tamrons lenses are MAP priced so any USA warranted lens will cost the same no matter where you buy it. Anyone selling for less is selling grey market and is usually not worth giving up the 6 year warranty.

Not true. I've bought from greentoe.com and gotten lower price and the full US warranty/guarantee.

I was also thinking that Tamron's were MAP priced.

Are you sure that whatever product that you purchased from greentoe.com was not on a manufacture's discount or sale at that time?

Yes. You put in a bid price and they shop it around. Several times I increased my bid price and it was quite a bit below the going price on many websites.

I didn't try to purchase any Tamron products, so they may be different. However, it's worth a shot.

My son was selling the tamron 17-50 last year for his Nikon, and I Bought it from him for my D7100 and it took great pictures Half the time.. It had a Focus problem, So I gave it back to my son. He said it had a 6 yr Warranty on it, I said for him to send it in and get it fixed then I will look at it. Well he didn't, he sold it on craiglist, Well I bought instead the Sigma 17-50 which was a better lens it seemed.

I think the Sigma 17-50 is a better lens.. and DxO rates it better then Nikon 17-55 and Tamron 17-50.
