Teach able moment here. When askeed for a copy we have to ask, Miss, will that be paper or bits.

We cannot give in to this trend.

In spite of the agreement of kindred souls, it still smarts. At least you haven't sold out.

Don't let it drive you to distraction. Mediocrity is the new standard among the younger generations. In the long run our whole culture is headed for the skids. It's the decline and fall of the Roman Empire all over again.

And I imagine every older generation since before the Roman Empire has made similar complaints. Damn whippersnappers, going to hell in a handbasket, we are!

I have a Canon Selphy printer and sometimes give 4 X 6 prints to friends (they only cost 27 cents per print). I shot a picture of a couple at a party and, viewing the shot on the LCD, her reaction was, "Love it! Can I get a copy?"

The next time I saw her I gave her a 4 X 6 print. To my horror she laid the picture on a table, shot a copy with her iPhone and left the print behind! Am I that far behind? :| :XD:

So funny! I would probably have done the same thing if I had a printer. I love your application of Churchill's speech to this!

I have had the same experience. It is also true in other fields. When I was younger my friends and I competed in who could build the best sounding stereo system. We had complex systems that did sound wonderful. Nowadays folks listen to all their music via mp3 files (roughly equivalent to .jpg in photography) through earbuds. Quality seems to take a back seat to convenience everywhere.

Larry,

You have learned a valuable lesson from this person, inconsideration. You are not behind the times, you have simply been brought up short to the current trends.

The next time, someone simply, asks for a copy of your picture, record their e-mail address. When you get home perform what ever PP is needed to satisfy your requirements. Save the file in your native file format, then resize the picture down to 4 x 6 inches at 72dpi, send the small version to her e-mail address. She will be able to show her friends the e-mailed picture on her Smart Phone(???), but will not be able to print at normal size.

All the high quality you kept in the original image and the PP you performed to meet your requirements will be viewable on the 2 inch screen of the phone.

Live and Learn, that is what Life is all about.

I love a real print, and I love a real picture, and I feel the individual that just left your print was very rude. But all that aside. The smart phone has allowed the capturing of world changing events that in the past would not have happened. When the plane was landed in the Hudson river a cell phone video was flashed around the world in seconds. Re tweeted as they say over a million times in just minutes. I am nearing the 3/4 century mark in my life and I have seem much. Some change is good some is not. Rudeness is never good. All in I take pictures or Photographs as I prefer with my new D7100, and I take snap shots with my I-Phone. They are not the same, but both are valuable.

I don't think it was rude, I think it was a misunderstanding...that's the point. It's a generational difference.

When she said "give me a copy" he heard "give me a print" and she meant "shoot me that file"

She left the left the gift on the table.

We don't know if she said thank you or not, but it is still rude to discard a gift in front of the sender.

The polite thing would have been to say "oh thank you for that" and then tuck it into her purse.

I feel the pain... I shoot a lot of high schools sports, and the rule(s) of thirds and space is completely lost on people. They always want crops with their kid front and center. Nothing more boring than two linemen butting heads, unless you can see the back making a cut off a great block...

If you had made her pay she wouldn't have left it--probably wouldn't have wanted it--the end game consequence, though, will be--they will break their phones and their hard drives will fail and the opening decades of the 21st century will simply vanish from history--once this is perceived you will see things change
