I really hate being a newbie

I just downloaded some pics from my new D7100. I took some in jpg format and then decided to take some in raw to practice using that post pic processing.

I downloaded them through the SD card to my computer and didn't bother looking to see that ALL the pictures were there. I promptly then deleted my SD card of the pics (as I was taught) and went back to look at the pictures on my computer. It was then that I noticed that I don't see ANY of the pics that I took in the RAW format. I've searched for the extension .nef but nothing shows up.

If I lost the pictures, I'll be quite sad and a BIG lesson learned but it does seem strange that I've downloaded all the pics and only the jpg came over.

Am I missing something here?

Do you have a program that reads raw files?

No worries. Unfortunately, I did format. She told us to delete and format. Lesson learned for me.

I leave the pictures on the card until I shoot my next big event. Way long after I have processed the RAW images, backed them up to 2 other HD's and sent the dvd of processed images off to the client. I have this little phobia in the back of my head about loosing images. Good syndrome to have. It would be nice to understand why they were not moved and where are they. I am a manual type of person. I move the images with Windows Explorer. not Lightroom, PS or Bridge.

We format in the camera after downloading, then we know if the photos came off OK. The camera will format fine w/o using the computer to erase.

Somebody may have already mentioned it, I cant be fagged
reading all replies, but; could the raw files be on a card in the second slot... I believe the D7100 has 2 storage facilities.

Anyway, you have learnt a lesson, don't delete from the card/s or format the card/s until you know the pictures are stored elsewhere safe and sound

Whoever told you to delete photos after transferring to your PC gave you very bad advice, as you know now. I never delete my card until its nearly full and then I save them to a back up device of some sort, in my case I use another SD card - they are cheap enough.

I have Adobe Elements and no back up. So I'll be getting that next.

The college teacher said to do that. Otherwise we would get duplicates of the files on our computer of those pictures.

I also format my SD card in my camera after I have downloaded the pics. I use Picasa so you can tell exactly what you have downloaded before you remove the SD card. I have a continuous download and regularly backup Picasa on a external HD.

I only delete the images that I know I am never going to need.

Of course, I also know that I am totally infallible and will never make a mistake!

I used to be concieted, but now I are perfect!

We can all agree that you are infallible. The only (and very minor) problem we can see is your spelling of conceit. We know you were testing us though to see about our infallibility. We both did well.

The computer will ask you if you want to import those duplicates. "Just say No." Gee, that would be a good slogan for drug use. :D

Also, go to the camera's Menu and set it to count pictures in series, rather than starting a 0001 every time you format. Unless the card is more than half full and I have multiple backups, I don't delete from the card.

Your comment is rather silly ! - My images are much safer on the memory cards ( assuming I have them protected - like in a bank vault) than on any hard drive anywhere !

Lets assume you are onto something here. What I'm curious about is how do you keep the files organized so when you grab a card you know what is on it? Especially if you have so many and for so long. Sure hope the bank is close by and you have 24/7 access. Inquiring minds want to know.

You might be. You do not mention that the D7100 has two SD cards in it. Is it possible that you have the cards set up to record JPG's on one and NEF's on the other? The second card could also be set up as a backup to the first card and therefore you might have duplicates stored on the second card.

Go into you computer and look where you keep your pictures to see if they are there

If you're using Lightroom, you have to set it to handle jpeg and raw as separate file when you shoot jpeg+raw. I had this happen to me, and had to research the cause.

Other softwares may also have to have certain preferences set for them to show up separately.

I also clear my card after every shoot, and reformat every few shoots. BUT - as soon as I download my photos, I copy them into my backup system. So I've got an extra copy for safekeeping. If you don't yet have a backup system, you should set one up.

In iPhoto, I'm asked if I want to delete "downloaded photos." Those that didn't download from card to iPhoto are not deleted. You may still have the images not downloaded.

Put the card back in?

I always do two downloads--always coy the SD card FIRST TWICE in two different places, then slip it back into the camera and then look at the images--- will format the card only when I am sure I have back ups!

Good lesson !

The bank is close by - but no 24/7 access.

I keep them chronologically marked stored and numbered. Also keep a diary/list of special/important subjects for each card - hand written and stored with the cards. I do understand, if you are a "PRO" and shooting for clients that you need a different workflo. ME? I work for myself .....
