I really hate being a newbie
I just downloaded some pics from my new D7100. I took some in jpg format and then decided to take some in raw to practice using that post pic processing.
I downloaded them through the SD card to my computer and didn't bother looking to see that ALL the pictures were there. I promptly then deleted my SD card of the pics (as I was taught) and went back to look at the pictures on my computer. It was then that I noticed that I don't see ANY of the pics that I took in the RAW format. I've searched for the extension .nef but nothing shows up.
If I lost the pictures, I'll be quite sad and a BIG lesson learned but it does seem strange that I've downloaded all the pics and only the jpg came over.
Am I missing something here?

You can try a program called Recuva to retrieve the files from your SD card if you haven't already overwritten them.
You can get it at their website
here.

Who on earth "taught" you that ??
I NEVER delete images on my memory cards - I treat them as film negatives. Still have the memory cards from my first digital camera .....

If you're using Lightroom, you have to set it to handle jpeg and raw as separate file when you shoot jpeg+raw. I had this happen to me, and had to research the cause.
Other softwares may also have to have certain preferences set for them to show up separately.
I also clear my card after every shoot, and reformat every few shoots. BUT - as soon as I download my photos, I copy them into my backup system. So I've got an extra copy for safekeeping. If you don't yet have a backup system, you should set one up.
I have Adobe Elements and no back up. So I'll be getting that next.
The college teacher said to do that. Otherwise we would get duplicates of the files on our computer of those pictures.

I actually don't see a need to panic here. Are any of the JPEG images worth processing as raw? In other words, do you have a "money" shot among the ones you deleted or need that extra dynamic range to fix an exposure problem? As a newbie, I can't image you have the image folks are willing to pay big bucks for yet---of course, I could be wrong. If they are images of your family and/or friends that cannot be replaced, then the JPEGs are good. I'd rather have a great JPEG over a good raw file any day! Brush off the dust, and get back to shooting... :-)

Could be time to get a backup teacher and not believe everything that you are told without questioning it!
As they say in Silicon Valley, Fail early, fail often, but don't keep making the same mistakes!

Who on earth taught you to do that  (kidding  ). I do have a few select images "locked" onto some of my cards. I don't have many photos that are prized enough to warrant permanently taking up space on my cards :| . I can certainly understand how this would be some of the best insurance to protect images though.

I have inadvertently formatted my card before I should have...lesson learned. Now, I check that everything is where it's supposed to be and backed up correctly first. I also usually just format before I start shooting again. However, I don't always remember to do that either :|
As long as you have not written anything else to the SD card you should be able to recover the files.
I have used 'Zero Assumption Recovery' to recover files from an SD card with success. The file names will not be the original file names, but you will have the images. It is free for the recovery of files on camera cards.
The URL to the software is
http://z-a-recovery.com/tutorials/digital-image-recovery.aspx .
I have not used the software with NEF files. There is a camera compatibility page.
Good luck!
Steve
I did not shoot jpg AND raw. I just switched mid stream because I thought I would try it.
None of my shots are money shots but I know of a couple that I thought were quite good and would like to have them.
I'm not in a panic just couldn't figure out why I couldn't see the raw files.
I've switched my camera back to jpg and won't shoot raw til I understand what I'm doing.

Cards are cheap(ish) , shoot both raw and JPEG unless you can think of a really good reason not to. Your time is worth more than an extra card! And don't believe everything you are told, even or especially by me!

Got it... good plan. Sorry for misunderstanding.
If you haven't formatted your card yet, there is still a way to get those images back... checkout RescuePro by SanDisk. Just Google it for more info.
No worries. Unfortunately, I did format. She told us to delete and format. Lesson learned for me.
What version of Adobe Elements do you have? if it is an older version it will not recognize the raw files from the D7100 .
