You know, I believe I'm doing good and this forum of people is the TOP! Th. I'll see my surgeion and hopefully will be "send home"! If I got you right, I have 2 small things I call my little blacks. Just before I left for hosp. my daughter brought me a new one, but it is a little red. I have it for especially my UHH--which I keep no matter what! would those be what you talking about? I should maybe get a special one to put things on?
No Buckeye. I think what you are referring to are flash drives. These are little stick like things. A portable drive is like a small pocket book, about 3" x 4" and half an inch thick. pops in your pocket, no problem.
This is great! Thank You. Now I have 2 new info. I've been wondering what they each are! So what I got is flash drive, and what you referring to is the other, the portable drive book? That is what you mean you were talking about those 2 kind? So you can bring one with you where ever, and another one has to stay in the computer? And each is a book. And what do they actually do?
I have both. I use the Western Digital for all my photographs, and music. I use the Seagate to back Up 3 computers. I have never had a problem with either one of them.
So your Western Digital is a little book that will go and work with your camera? And your Seagate stays in your computer only and it can just keep very much computer info without leaving it in the computer? ! But they are each a book? Oh. If he works with your camera, does he attach on the camera then?
All the best to you and I applaud your determination to relearn and go forward

Never Give Up, Never Give Up ! "
I use a device called BlacX made by Thermaltake. You can just leave it pluged into a usb port. Then you can slip into it a 2.5" or 3.5" SATA Hard drive of your choice. I have a 1-TB Seagate plugged into mine.

No Buckeye. PhotoOne is saying that he keeps all his photos that he loads to his computer on the Western digital portable drive (little book) which he atttaches to his computer and saves all his photos to it. The 'little book' does not attach to the camera.

Hey Buckeye. I am trying to answer each question you raise separately so you can follow.
First of all; Western Digital and Seagate are two different manufacturers of portable drives.
Either one can be plugged into you computer via a USB port and either one can be disconnected and carried with you when you have loaded your files from the computer.
Neither one HAS to stay with the computer.

I have a Seagate and a Free Agent and love both, but have heard a lot of great comments about Western Digital.
I think Seagate makes the Free Agent Drives. The one I have is called Seagate Free Agent Go Flex Drive. Unless Free Agent also makes drives independently. I can't always keep up with the brands of things out there, there are so many. But either way I like mine and here soon I am going to have to get another one to just keep my photos on.

Neither of mine says both Seagate and Free Agent, so I'm not sur either, but they do work exactly the same.

Buckeye, here are the things we all love about an external hard drive.
1. You can save EVERYTHING on them so you will not lose ANYTHING.
2. You store your photos on them and get them OFF of your computer.
3. If you go to visit someone you can take it with you and plug it into their computer to show them the photos you want them to see. (and add a few of theirs to it while you are there...if they say OK)
4.You can set up folders in the XHD to make finding things easy, for instance, I have folders named:
Family..inside that I have one named Children, one named Grandchildren, one named Our pets.
Then I have one named Friends. Inside that one I have one named Horse friends, one named Art friends, and one named Personal friends.
I have one for Wildlife. Inside that there is one for Birds, one for Bears, One for Deer.....etc
Now you know the story of my life. get one, you will love it

A couple notes.
There is also 'cloud' online storage. Would cost monthly or yearly fee. Advantage is that items (pixs) are stored in a different location than your home/business in case of a diaster, i.e. fire, thief, storm.
Actually is a good idea to have two external hard drives, with one to be keep in a different location (safe deposit).
I would not get them off your computer to just one hard drive. Two copies minimum.
Hard drives do and will fail and/or photos become corrupted.
You doing a lovely job and I THANK YOU!!! I want so very much to KNOW stuff, but it's tricky---very tricky!!! Very lucky for me you and others on this wonderful forum!

I know Buckeye it is very tricky. But take it slow and ask all you want. As I said before, folks on here are real patient.
Just remember, the only stupid question is the one not asked.
THANKS so very much dundeelad! I can't wait to get back to my cameras, computer and photos. Isn't this a wonderful place!!!
