External hard drives plug into a usb port on your pc and the sytem recognises a new drive. They are in two flavors, portable and desktop.
Portable ones use the power from the USB port and can be unplugged and carted around. Desktop type require external power and again plug into a USB port on your PC.
Portables can be had up to 500 gig + and desktops are now up to 3 terrabyte. You can store a lot of stuff on one of those.

Thanks Lad. I really appreciate it. I am recovering a surgery at my sister's and have the use her new laptop. It has my email in it, but I can read it,etc, but not put things into someplace. A stroke some time ago screwed up photog learning and I'm trying real hard to get stuff the way people do. I really love this forum. If I am true and let people know my qq is knowledge screw-up and not just messing around, people are (like your own self) lovely to help. I think I got a lot of what you told me for what it is, the rest I gotta study on. How's to learn if ya don't keep sharp??

I use both Seagate and WD. Something to think about though:
A new generation of storage is just starting to hit the market. I've only seen it in the new expensive laptops so far, but it is a solid state drive. The ones being used in the ultra thin notebooks are 250gb but my guess is they will soon have out larger models both as enternal and external drives. The beauty of these -- no moving parts. The only thing that will crash one of these is a virus. So if you want to have rock solid back-up for your photos, check out this technology.

So sorry to hear of your stroke Buckeye, but folks on here are real patient, don't worry.
As to your sister's laptop, it would seem that a small portable drive would be ideal for you. They are not too costly and you could just plug it in to her laptop and put all your stuff on it. That way nothing goes on to her machine and you can just put it into your pocket when you move.
Good luck and hope you recover well from your recent surgery.

I have a 1T Seagate attached to my iMac and to my surprise I cannot write to it because it is formatted NTFS. I have another, smaller, one to which the iMac backs up and it is formatted FAT32, no problems. My Macbook backs up to a Time Capsule 500Gb. I'll have to get another external to transfer all the files on the Seagate to while I re-format it to FAT32. I have less than 100 gb to transfer so a small external will do fine for what I need.

Still just a little too expensive for my budget and the sizes are still a little low but I agree, this is the way things are going.

You know, I believe I'm doing good and this forum of people is the TOP! Th. I'll see my surgeion and hopefully will be "send home"! If I got you right, I have 2 small things I call my little blacks. Just before I left for hosp. my daughter brought me a new one, but it is a little red. I have it for especially my UHH--which I keep no matter what! would those be what you talking about? I should maybe get a special one to put things on?

Saw good prices on HD's at Costco on sunday. 3TB for $139 and 2TB for $119. Availability is increasing and prices are dropping. As Alienmurphy said, do your homework. Both Seagate and Western Digital are good brands.
