Hello from Canyon Lake, Gendarme! Welcome to the Hog! I grew up in Katy! Not the small town now that it was back then.....! Aaron
You are right there. I remember driving through Katy as a kid when it was just a spot on I-10 with a bunch of rice fields and geese.

I am a bit (or more than a bit) of an amateur who just got his first DSLR. I had a super-zoom point and shoot before but just got a Nikon D7100. I am loving it and hoping to take my photography up a notch. Already I am enjoying the increase capability of the equipment. I just hope my capability will catch up to it someday.
I have already gotten a lot of good information from reading the digests and can see that this is an active and supportive community. The attached image was one of the first I took with my new gear. I like how the light shows through the foliage.

Welcome to the Hog. I took the very same route. Point and shoot, Super Zoom, then D7000. A very fine camera. I am shooting with it tomorrow.
Glad you are getting good information. Be sure to check out the links section.
I see what you mean about the light on the green foliage. Very nice. FYI if you check the box "Store Original" when uploading then other Hogs can download a much higher quality version of the image along with metadata.
What type of camera was your superzoom?

Thanks for the tips. My superzoom was a Canon Powershot SX0IS. It was great, but limited for the things I wanted to do with it. The frustration actually made me stop using it eventually and just take occasional phone pics. Really loving my D7100 so far.

I know that cam. Glad you are enjoying the D7100.
Welcome Gendarme, I lived in Spring Branch when there was still some distance between Houston and Katy.

Can't tell where one stops and the other starts anymore. I lived near Westhiemer and Hwy. 6 when most of that area was still cow pasture.

Howdy! Would love to have the photo ops you have close by. I can hit Galveston, and there are a very hidden gems in town, but liking nature and living in the burbs leaves me wishing for my camera every time I see a bird while driving! My 12 year old says I am obsessed.

Ha - that's funny because the majority of the photos I take are in Katy! I work as a Horse Show photographer at Great Southwest Equestrian Center off Mason.
But I do love the ol' beach and wild flowers for photo ops with my kiddo. I keep an old canon XSi in my car for emergency photos!!!!!

Challenging work. Moving horses, kids and lots of people. Need a throw down for my car.
