Hi Tom. I have a lot of gear. I write down the serial numbers and take pictures of everything. Then I go into the insurance office and we sit and talk.:) It is now on my home owners policy and everything is 100% covered for everything. Even dropping it. I pay around 150 a year. And about the same for my truck load of tools.:) But I have 2 houses with them,3 cars,a camper, my shop and a policy to cover me out on the job too, in case I knock down a house.:):) It cost me a little but it makes one feel good to know I will have no worries.:)

Having been turned down by State Farm on a camera stolen
(documented by police reports) after an UPS delivery
on an ebay sale. I have looked into pro insurance but it is expensive and has a big deductible. My agent tells me that I am covered even in other countries for stolen gear. But she knows I am an older creative marketing guy and she warned me that if it was for work they wouldn't cover anything. Last week shot 1800 people Marathon for a cause. Had 8k in gear with me. Carried the camera's with me the whole 3 days. I would worry about losing gear in a night time park shoot. Any thoughts on insurance companies that you can't trust?

No It's An Old Habit From When I Was In The Multi Media Business. Westinghouse Required Us The Use The Tech Called Initial Cap. We Would Produce These Shows 80 Hours A Week. Old Habits Wont Die

What a bunch of ignorant nonsense you speak! 238 blacks killed by police in 2014. Total number of police killed by blacks and whites in 2014 51!

Just google the question.

I posted some stats earlier, along with my sources. Your police KOD number is, I believe a bit low.

The percentage of blacks killed (which probably includes many of mixed race) is 21.60%. According to U.S. census, the black population is 13.2%; multi-racial is 2.4% (data adjusted for 2013 per quickfacts.census.gov). I present these facts for informational purposes only, and I make no conclusions or inferences as to their meaning.

For all the racists, ideologues, ignoramuses and just plain idiots:
"All we need is love, love. Love is all we need." The Beatles. I think Jesus would concur.

Thanks Erv. I have sent photo's and serial numbers to State Farm. But what is troubling is the answer's I get from my agency
of over 20 years. She casually said at the loss of a Nikon D800 first personal item claim "They don't quite like it that the camera was not in your possesion. Then I had a 2nd floor leak from a tub that required much repair work and cost. This insurer played around for 5 months challenging every issue. We had 5 plumbers survey the problem including theirs. Wanted to resubmit the camera claim and she said "don't do that it will hurt your insurance. Friend who is adjuster told me that all the companies have problems. State Farm seems worst. I wish you good luck Erv but until they have your claim the game changes.
Thanks.

Well, I had not expected this thread to explode into so many unrelated topics. Seems there are those among us who can use any excuse to rant and rave about anything, related or not. So let me bring this back on topic and end this thread.

I am now back from NYC with all my equipment and internal organs in their proper place. I never did go to Liberty State park but did make the trip to Staten Island at the memorial from mid afternoon till after 11. I made several new friends, some homeless, some a step up from that (of note, Timmy a war vet with a pension for brown paper bag beer) and several other wannabe photographers asking about my equipment. I had no problem with anyone even though I was alone with 2 tripods on the go. I also covered Manhattan from Battery Park up to the Cloisters on 200th via the subway and walked the entire High Line. Next day I walked the Brooklyn Bridge and sat there well past sunset.

The only problem I did have was at Brooklyn Bridge Park where a few idiots with their professional cell phone cameras asking me if I wouldn't mind moving all my equipment (in the middle of a time lapse series) over a few feet so they could get their photos, even though there is several hundred feet of waters edge that gives the same viewpoint. I gave them all my best NY style response falling short of the F bomb.

So to answer my own question, yes it is safe to photograph in NYC and adjoining boroughs into the wee hours as long as you use your head and keep your wits about you. To all the doomsday visionaries, stay safe and enjoy your own sheltered world. For better or worse I like to see and learn of the real world.

To the rest who can't stay on topic, rant on, I'm outa here to capture the real world. :D

Sounds way too dangerous to be worth the risk. Unless you can go with a well-armed entourage, which in itself might invite problems, I'd go or a sunset shot instead.

Great way to cap a wayward thread. Glad it worked out well for you.
