I have a stable full of wide angle primes and up to 50mm and 16 -35 mm. It depends on what I am doing as to what I use.
I haven't had a prime in years. I think if you were to canvas america to find out what most shoot, zoom's would be the overwhelming choice.

You will also find that most people don't know what a prime is. A large number of people only take pictures with their cell phone. An a large number have never experienced looking through a camera's viewfinder, but instead just hold the point and shoot at arm's length to look at the LCD. Just look around at the common tourist spots to see the standard "arm's extended" picture taking pose. I tend to make it a point to look for it. And most people don't even have a clue at what an F-Stop number is, let alone Aperture Priority. Same for ISO.
I remember one evening in Kauai, there was a most beautiful moon rise. I had my camera on a tripod, using manual mode and was getting beautiful pictures of the moon rise and the reflections on the calm ocean. But I was the only one getting pictures. Everyone else was out there with their point and shoots and grumbling about why their pictures didn't turn out. That is the state of the population in general.
Another case. A beautiful eclipse of the moon. The point and shooters were out in force and not getting anything worth saving at all. One person had even resorted to using his flash!
So canvasing America, or any other country for that matter, is not going to return any meaningful results. Garbage in/Garbage out.

Great minds - and all that other stuff...... :)
I also use both. It depends on the shoot.
i use only prime lenses in my film cameras, regardless of format. no zoom lens comes close, in my line of work.
I use both, on occasion, but prefer Primes, and use them most often. I use a 35mm Prime for landscapes, and street photos. I use an 85mm Prime for portraits.

Is anyone just using prime lenses or are most people using zooms.
You don't need primes unless your shooting for a living . And blowing your pictures . up to a substantial size . If your only enlarging to a 8x10 or slightly
More a prime is not nessasary. A good zoom will do you well as for the type
Of handling after the shot . And what you do with it . As sell as a wedding
Photography . Or a news hound , pro game sport shooter , or for national geography . Then load up on primes . The rest for the most part are just fooling them selves . Shooting some nice shots . Then there filled away on a cd some where and looked at on a computer screen ounce every five years
. Buy the most expensive zooms you can afford . and you will only need three at the most . Start with the nikon 14 -24 f2.8
Bram, you're often difficult to understand but today you're totally unreadable. Are you totally blitzed?
At least have the courtesy to summarize what's gone on in the four pages since this is a conversation from a month ago and I don't really want to reread it to see if you're making sense.

Yea your right I should have said ( yes there is people using primes ) and
( yes most are using zooms ) I thought I answered in such a way that primes
Are not really that nessary for the average shooter . And by using a zoom or two . You can still enjoy this as a hobby . And you don't have to shot primes . I would sooner shoot zooms than primes , hay I do !!. I have a couple primes I never use .
I shoot Leica, so all primes, but back when I had the Nikin Df the 58mm f/1.4 G was glued to it as well.
I probably use a 50mm lens the most for serious photography and portraits, though I own a 90mm and 35mm, they don't get as much use.
For more casual photography I use the Leica X (113), which has a fixed 23mm (35mm equiv) and the more I use it, the more I like the 35mm focal length. I'll probably add a 28mm lens to my M kit at some point.
