Right now I have a Seagate that backs up my computer. That is probably what I will stick with when I get one to just back up my pictures.

I have a Mac and use Apple's Time Capsule, but I've heard good things about Western Digital and Seagate. Do get an external for backup whatever brand it may be.

Seagate. Have a regulare External hard drive in the family (Seagate) and I have a portable external hard drive (Western Digital) and the Western is junk already and the other one is going strong. Next time I get one, it will be another Seagate.

A lot of folks discuss using a 2nd hard drive for just photos' storage but you need to consider a device that provides Auto-Backup for your current hard drive. Apple's THE BOOK is great in that it automatically saves all that's on the C hard drive

Seagate; Western Digital, both great drives whatever the size. Used them for years, internal and external and never had a failure.... touch wood!

I've used both western digital and seagates never had problems with either. Also have some enclosures that use old drives from pc's that work quite well also.

I.m no expert but I have a seagate & an old one called simpletech. I have had the old one several years now and it still works great. It was a monster in it's day 149gb. Only problem is that it needs it's own power. I also really like the seagate as it is way more portable and has way more storage. I would recommend the seagate & also buying 2 and keep your computer empty & running faster. quote=nikonman4]Any opinions on what kind to get? I wanted to get a 1 TB.[/quote]

I have a Seagate 500 GB to back up the system (way too much) and for everything else I have Carbonite. A while ago I had everything wiped out, twice; once by a lighting strike and the other by a virus (mu luck). Since I've been using Carbonite I haven't had any problems (no lighting strikes either)

There has been a major shortage of hard drives due to last yearÂ’s flooding in Thailand. I just saw a 2TB exactly like mine go for $135.00 on eBay. I paid $70.00 for the same HD over a year ago. right now that same HD is $130.00 at Best Buy. Do your research, don't get taken.
