I started out with the Nikon F2AS back in 1977. I was very young at the time and didn't care about how the camera looks. I later bought an F3HP just because it was less expensive for the entire F3HP and MD-4 motor drive than buying the MD-2 and its battery pack MB-1 for the F2. I didn't like the look of the F3 then and thought it was too sissy looking. But the F3 grew on my so I have to vote for it as the best looking SLR.
I bought the Df because I thought it looks decent, a break from the ugly looking DSLR but although it looks OK it's no beauty like the F3HP.

It's never too late to find an old used 'Hockey Puck'. I was surprised how heavy it is. They really were built to last!

I know it is not an SLR, but I always found the Contax G1 to be a very elegant, yet utilitarian, looking camera. I guess I have never found SLR's attractive as they always seem bulky and boxy to me. The rangefinders have always held a special attraction for me and I have always lusted after the G1.

I'm going to have to say my favorite is my special made Sony birding camera. The only drawback is sometimes the birds want to eat the camera.

Excellent! Consider yourself lucky that you are not photographing aardvarks! :-D

My first SLR was a film 35mm Mamiya/Secor 1000. To me, it was a real beauty. It wasn't as bulky as the Nikon Photomic of that time period.

This is a very interesting question and one I have never considered given that I am a "camera as a tool" guy.

So when I consider the "beauty" of an SLR it is a little hard for me to separate form from function.

That being said, I am going to vote for the Hasselblad 500 C/M, circa late '70s.
At first look,it appears to be no more than a simple little box. But with a lens and film back attached, it is perfectly designed to be held in the palm of your hand, perfectly balanced and the controls of the camera are are perfectly designed and placed with absolutely everything you need and nothing that you don't need.

Simple, elegant, beautiful.
This is a very interesting question and one I have... (show quote)

Yeah, functional beauty can be a legitimate barometer of beauty, but I hope to persuade you that cameras are not tools, but finely crafted little pints of technological perfection. They deserve to be pampered, if beautiful they are instruments more than tools.

You know now that I come to think of it Bebu, the Nikon F100 was quite a handsome camera, and one of the last film cameras.

I'm with you 100%, Trent! I owned a Contax G1 and loved its relatively sleek design and it's excellent balance when matched with its 45mm Zeiss lens (in part 'cause I couldn't afford the 90mm and wasn't fond of the 35mm). I got great images with that camera and absolutely HATED when circumstances forced me to sell it. To this day, I still visit the KEH archives lusting after it. The only camera that could ever make me accept the hassle of shooting film images in this era.

Pith,

I have to agree, somewhat, on the Pentax LX ... except for the Limited Edition Gold model and the one with the green lizzard covering ... ! I don't know about the Contax. I have not seen any truely remarkable DSLRs, they all seem to be built like me - slightly out of shape.

I'll get back to you after I rattle my brain and see what floats to the top ...

Maybe some of the nastiness in the "attic" is seeping down into the photography section. BTW, the Nikon DF is the most beautiful DSLR in my opinion
As an aside - why people bother with negative remarks is beyond my understanding ... !

I have a very shallow question for you all. What is the most physically attractive SLR, or DSLR you've ever seen. This isn't a question for the "a camera is a tool crowd" but for those among us that like the way certain cameras look, in addition to their practical application. For me it's the Contax ST, and the Pentax LX. The Contax is just the most exquisite looking camera I've ever seen. I loved the understated, and in my opinion underrated looks, and utility of the Pentax. It was lighter than an F3, and weather sealed around the pentaprism. It had a full range of manual , and electronic shutter speeds. It had a full 30 seconds long exposure capability, whereas my F3 had 16 seconds. It was just a little gem.

So, let's see your nominations for the most beautiful SLR, or DSLR, ever made. :D ;) pith

Find you post a little odd. On the one hand you ask for the most "physically attractive" as opposed to the "a camera is a tool crowd" and then you name two cameras that are attractive only in that they are totally utilitarian and not very "physically attractive" I don't get it.

That would be high on my list as well. Also, I like the looks of my old Canon T-70 film SLR.
