Find you post a little odd. On the one hand you ask for the most "physically attractive" as opposed to the "a camera is a tool crowd" and then you name two cameras that are attractive only in that they are totally utilitarian and not very "physically attractive" I don't get it.

Sometimes "utilitarian" is a beauty in itself. The old Volkswagen Beetle was ugly to most people, but to many it was a beautiful, utilitarian vehicle.

I know it is not an SLR, but I always found the Contax G1 to be a very elegant, yet utilitarian, looking camera. I guess I have never found SLR's attractive as they always seem bulky and boxy to me. The rangefinders have always held a special attraction for me and I have always lusted after the G1.

I totally agree with you. The slr and dslr cameras have not been attractive to me as beautiful objects. But lot of rangefinders are. Like Canon P, some nikon, leica, konica, contax and many more.

I agree. But I still found the two views in the post at opposition. If you find utilitarian beautiful that is fine, bit to then cut out the "camera is a tool crowd" when you are a card carrying member seems a bit odd.

I find the original Exacta Exa to be one of the most elegant-looking SLR's ever.

Maybe you missed the "in addition to their practical application" bit. I wouldn't buy a camera based on the way it looks if it was a lousy camera otherwise. Sometimes as someone mentioned a cameras functionality can add to it's beauty. That's a philosophical take on beauty, you're free to apply your own.

To this day, I still visit the KEH archives lusting after it. The only camera that could ever make me accept the hassle of shooting film images in this era.

I am right there with you! Still haven't completely given up on the idea of buying one someday.

That's a tough one. My first SLR, a Yashica TL Super, will always be beautiful to me. So will the next one that I will end up buying. No matter what it may be.

My first SLR was a TL Super, too. I recently purchased a 300 AF, Yashica's last SLR, which has a nice streamlined look to it, in case I have to walk into a strong headwind.

Took hundreds of slides with the TL Super while in 'Nam in '68 & '69. I really should start scanning them.

SLR and DSLR, I'd have to say the Pentaxes - except of course for the Q and K-01. Still wouldn't buy one though.

Otherwise, my favorite is the (believe it or not) Kodak Z8612. It has the perfect shape for a camera. I use an Olympus E-PL5 now partly because it approximates the size, shape, and layout of that camera.

Ugliest camera ever? Anything shaped like the Minolta Damage - excuse me, Dimage.

Camera Love Story -

Was smitten with the Olympus OM's when I was young (long long ago), wandered back into photography through various routes many decades later. Three years ago I ordered a Canon 7D, went to pick it up, and there sat a brand new just-unboxed Olympus EM5. I picked it up and it was retro-love at first touch, bought it, took it with me, forgot Canon. Still think she's the prettiest little camera I've ever owned.

Below, a web image of one of the old OM cameras, and a snap of my EM5 (taken this morning by her brother the EM1)- I thought she looked right sweet in the morning sun.

Fun thread!

Never owned an Olympus OM-1 but I have to agree- that's my vote for one of the best looking (and designed) cameras.
I sold cameras at the base exchange for a while and that OM1- felt like a glove.

My vote for the best-looking digital SLR goes to the Hasselblad H4D below. To paraphrase Homer Simpson: "Mmmmm! 'Blad".
(and no, I've never even held one.)

THAT WAS MY FIRST, TOO! I bought it brand new in 1966. I was never able to afford more lenses (I bought a Bogen enlarger), but it had the Pentax screw mount so Pentax lenses would fit it. TL I figure stood for "Through Lens" since it had a trap needle exposure TTL exposure meter. I basically started my career with that camera, because I turned my bachelor kitchen into a darkroom and it was off to the races!  I eventually went back to school on the GI Bill and majored in photography. :)

What goes around comes around. Mr. Pith is full of negative remarks.

It's a valid question for a photography forum. Perhaps you should take your own advice and not waste your time replying to topics you have no interest in.

Mr. Pith is getting what he deserves. Mr. Pith took it upon himself to derail other legitimate threads.

Remember the Electro 35? My first "real" camera!
