Thanks John, I really appreciate your visit and kind words. I am going to strive over the next month to stalk and capture a bunch of these in flight. I need the flight pictures for a graphic novel I'm working on. Wish me luck, as you said you know how difficult it can be. Thanks also for the thumbup. Much appreciated my friend. :-D :-D

The last one is the pick of the bunch, Jim. You froze the wings beautifully. :D :D

Thanks Earl, I was just lucky as the wind was blowing so hard they kept drifting in and out of critical focus. I really appreciate the visit and the nice comment. :-D :-D

I went out yesterday afternoon with the express purpose of capturing dragonflies in flight. The wind was really blowing too hard for close up photography so I didn't take extension tubes. I was able to make a few captures with the 100-300 zoom lens though. Please try the downloads.

Very very nice Jim, they sure are fun, well done

Great shots, Jim, in spite of the challenges you faced! In #3 it looks like the wind is trying to buffet him away.

BTW: how do you manage to shoot them through those tiny bars behind which you are holding them prisoner?

Very nice shots Jim. Yes it is hard shooting dragons in flight. You need to just go out that day with that task in mind and spend time watching them patrolling, pick out and area where you will get good focus and then start shooting. I feel luck to get 1/60 that's a keeper. This species will fly early morning until late afternoon so you should have plenty of opportunities if it is what you want. It is considered a possible migrant species moving along the coast in summer and early fall. It is in fact an immature male Carolina Saddlebags. The Red Saddlebags which is also in your area of the country has black dots on segments 8 and 9 while the black goes almost completely around segments 8 and 9 in the Carolina. (Tip of the abdomen). The other very distinguishing field marks is Carolina - metallic purple face and Red has a very red face.
Good luck with the book.

So glad you enjoyed them MT; hopefully that one will show itself when you are armed and ready. I was in the swamp this morning and saw hundreds of dragonflies of all sizes and all were flying and I was in a small boat and didn't capture a single one. Oh well that's how it goes some days. Thanks again. :-D :-D
