I see it now, it is a push pull. Does yours ever flop out? (what a strange sounding question!!!)

I am looking at that lens now on Ken Rockwell's site, is it a push/pull lens? That is an incredible savings!
The push/pull is second best, from what I've read. The one called the "two ring" is the better one, and it's priced accordingly.

Now I have found a 28-70 f/2.8 with great reviews... time for a beer, let this all soak in.... Too much reading for one day!

I'm with you on that. It's happy hour in Oregon! :-)

I bought a refurb D7100 and my girlfriend now has a D7100. She also took my 18-55 and my 55-200 kit lenses that came with my D3200. She loves 'her' camera! I just ordered a refurb D610 from B&H and it shipped this morning which will leave me with an excellent camera and no wide to medium focal lengths for it. I do have a Sigma 70-300 that I can use along with my Nikon 300mm f/4 AF-s and my Nikon 500mm f/4P.
My budget is roughly $1000 for some new glass. I prefer fixed focal lengths, f/1.8 is plenty fast enough for me, but I will consider another zoom if it offers sharp, quality images.
I could use some advice on lenses for me to investigate, I prefer Nikon glass but am open to other brands. Thank you!

I have a D610 and quite a few lenses for it. If you want one lens with great range, the 28-300 f3.5-5.6 works well and costs around $950, it has VR and is usually my go to lens. An alternative is the 24-85 VR at around $550 - mine is tack sharp and, to me, is every bit as good as the much more expensive 24-70 F2.8 except for being a slower lens. Since I don't shoot action with it, the VR more than compensates for the speed loss. Combine the 24-85 with the 70-300 VR (also around $500) and you cover the range from 24-300 with 2 lenses that will provide excellent images. You can then add a 50mm F1.8 for around $200 if you need a fast prime. All the aforementioned are available used or refurbished for less too. My travel kit is usually a 16-35 F4 and the 28-300 but that pair will exceed your budget.
Cameta was selling 24-85 vr referbs for just under $300
I have several fixed lenses but I generally use the 28-300 as my walk around lens. I also have the Nikon 24-70mm which is also a favorite. Carrying the 28-300 and the 16-35 pretty much covers what I do. I do have a 50mm 1.8 around if I need it. They are all sharp lenses. You can get deals on these from ebay or other outfits. If your girlfriend can afford it, get a 17-55mm DX lens. Tack sharp!

Look into the Nikon 24-120 f/4. This is my carry about lens. It is sharp and unlike the long zoom range Nikon zoom will not extend itself while carrying it around.
I also carry the 35mm and the 85mm Nikon lenses if I think that I'm going to be doing detail work, or I decide that I should just make my legs be the zoom mechanism.

Just to give you an alternative - I got the previous "Nikon's Best," the 35-70 f/2.8 for a little over $300. Great lens in excellent condition. Then I looked on the KEH site and bought brand new (new old stock) Nikon 80-200mm f/2.8 for $600+. I got both lenses for under $1,000. I don't have that extra bit of wide angle, and I don't have VR, but I saved $3,000 on those two lenses.
Two wonderful old Nikons!

Since you prefer prime lenses, I'd say you'd be covered pretty well with a 24, 35 and 50.

Norman, I will now take you down the road less traveled -
Two older lenses: Tamron SP 20-40 f2.7-3.5 ( about $250 most places) and the Tamron SP 28-105 f2.8 (about$350 most places) KEH is the best place to get these. I have and use both these lenses on crop frame, but they are both full frame.
It would seem you are a serious photog - and as such, you really should have a GOOD 70-200/300 ! - maybe this should be your first priority.
Hi,
You wrote:"My budget is roughly $1000 for some new glass. I prefer fixed focal lengths, f/1.8 is plenty fast enough for me, but I will consider another zoom if it offers sharp, quality images."
My suggestion is to buy the Nikon 85mm 1.8G (razor sharp lens) and the 50mm either 1.8 D or G. I have the 50mm 1.8D and it is a really sharp lens, and cheap. The 85mm goes for about $500 and the 50mm D lens goes for a little over $100. That leaves you almost $400, so add another hundred and a half and have the 35mm 1.8 G and you will have a great set of prime lenses.
