I see it now, it is a push pull. Does yours ever flop out? (what a strange sounding question!!!)

The push/pull is second best, from what I've read. The one called the "two ring" is the better one, and it's priced accordingly.

Now I have found a 28-70 f/2.8 with great reviews... time for a beer, let this all soak in.... Too much reading for one day!

I have a D610 and quite a few lenses for it. If you want one lens with great range, the 28-300 f3.5-5.6 works well and costs around $950, it has VR and is usually my go to lens. An alternative is the 24-85 VR at around $550 - mine is tack sharp and, to me, is every bit as good as the much more expensive 24-70 F2.8 except for being a slower lens. Since I don't shoot action with it, the VR more than compensates for the speed loss. Combine the 24-85 with the 70-300 VR (also around $500) and you cover the range from 24-300 with 2 lenses that will provide excellent images. You can then add a 50mm F1.8 for around $200 if you need a fast prime. All the aforementioned are available used or refurbished for less too. My travel kit is usually a 16-35 F4 and the 28-300 but that pair will exceed your budget.

I have several fixed lenses but I generally use the 28-300 as my walk around lens. I also have the Nikon 24-70mm which is also a favorite. Carrying the 28-300 and the 16-35 pretty much covers what I do. I do have a 50mm 1.8 around if I need it. They are all sharp lenses. You can get deals on these from ebay or other outfits. If your girlfriend can afford it, get a 17-55mm DX lens. Tack sharp!

Here is a link to a thread I started on the Nikonians forum about older, high quality Nikon lenses. I love my 17-35mm f/2.8 & my most used lens is the 28-105mm.

Look into the Nikon 24-120 f/4. This is my carry about lens. It is sharp and unlike the long zoom range Nikon zoom will not extend itself while carrying it around.
I also carry the 35mm and the 85mm Nikon lenses if I think that I'm going to be doing detail work, or I decide that I should just make my legs be the zoom mechanism.

Since you prefer prime lenses, I'd say you'd be covered pretty well with a 24, 35 and 50.

Norman, I will now take you down the road less traveled -
Two older lenses: Tamron SP 20-40 f2.7-3.5 ( about $250 most places) and the Tamron SP 28-105 f2.8 (about$350 most places) KEH is the best place to get these. I have and use both these lenses on crop frame, but they are both full frame.
It would seem you are a serious photog - and as such, you really should have a GOOD 70-200/300 ! - maybe this should be your first priority.
