i have the 24-70mm2.8L and i love it. my favorite lens. do not miss IS at all. i have had it about 1 year and have taken thousands of tack-sharp photos. i haven't missed the IS system at all...as a matter of fact, this lens has taught me how to take great photos with no IS.

6 months ago i bought the 70-200mm2.8L IS II lens and haven't even turned on the IS switch!!

L lenses are worth every penny. if they were not worth it, the pros could save a fortune and just buy kit lenses. nothing wrong with kit lens...great for starting out and learning how to use the camera.

i held off quite awhile buying an L lens, because i was trying to justify that they were not worth the money. i rented a 24-70mm2.8L for 3 days....on the last day, i returned the rental and ordered me a new one.

if lighting conditions were always perfect....we could all save a bunch of money and use out kit lens. i still have mine and i shoot with it every now and then on my old t1i when i go somewhere and i don't want to worry about damage or loss to my equipment. and the photos i get are pretty good.

Light passes through the lens and the camera records what it sees. If the information is distorted, mangled, or lost on its way to the camera it makes no difference how good the recording device is.

IMHO the quality lens is well worth the money and if I had to choose between the lens upgrade or the body upgrade then I would choose the lens.

I just purchase the 24-70 2.8 last Friday. It is amazing!!!

I purchased the same one and ditto your thoughts.... I have not found the non-IS to be a disadvantage have you?[/quote]

Initially I thought not having the IS would be a disadvantage; but like you I haven't found it to be. I am very happy with the lens.

IMO it is the photographer and not the glass or the camera.

I love my L glass and personally think they are worth every penny I spent. I have 2 L lenses and when compared to my non-L glass the images are so much better. Crisper. Cleaner. The reason for this post is that I was asked if L glass is worth the money. The person is thinking about purchasing a T3 canon and was told that they would need "more" of a camera to get the shots L glass was made for. I don't believe that is the case. What do you think???

I shot with my kit lense 250, at youth football games. A young women shot with her " L " lenses, [ side by side in many instances ] you will never confuse my photos with hers. She was kind enough to share her shots with me. I will have to upgrade before next season.

Glass makes the photo. Any Canon camera 10 MP and above will benifit by using L series glass. All the camera is doing is recording what the glass is seeing.

I own a T3i, not my favorite camera, but it works fine with all three of my L series glass lenses.
The reason I do not prefer this camera is because I do mainly nature shots and the fps is not fast enough to suit me. The kids got it for me so I will keep it for a while then sell it for something I prefer.

Always, always, always buy the best possible lens you can afford. I have never bought a camera with a kit lens. Only camera bodies, and then purchase the good stuff.

This is the axiom of "garbage in, garbage out" when you use a lesser lens, expect less. When you use a great lens, expect greatness. If you buy a third party lens instead of the OEM lens, expect limitation (most of the time.)

Buy the L lens now if you can afford it. You are going to want it later if you don't. I have four L lenses and I definitely think they are worth the money.

I should have added, yes they are worth the money.
I own 5 lenses, four are CAnon and three are L series. Love every one of them.

At the chance I am going to open a can of worms here, if you can not afford the L series lenses, and they are expensive, look at Tamron lenses. They make some excellent glass for Canon.

Hi Fran,

I've been shooting with two L lenses for quite a while, a 28-300mm and a 24-105mm and they are spectacular and rugged lenses. the former is a bit heavy but the results are worth it. I'm a firm believer in you get what you pay for and in the long run the difference is worth every cent.
Good luck with your choice.

If you look at the Photozone reviews, you will see most non-IS lenses are sharper than the IS version. More lens elements floating around ( IS ) does not seem reliable to me, and in fact problematic ! I guess if everything is working perfectly it is good - but how often and for how long is that ? .....

I shoot with a 50D and have some "L" glass, 24-70, 70-200 & 100 macro. They are all faaaar superior to my kit lenses. I rarely ever pull the kits out of the bag anymore :)

Fran,

I have the 5D MK II and I purchased the 24-70mm f2.8L USM, the 8-15mm f4.0L and the 100-400 f4.5-f5.6 IS USM (over time, of course). Good glass makes the shot. Most quality lenses are as good, or better, than the digital sensors to which they're attached. I've used these lenses on my 50D and had great results as well.

Canon L glass is an OUTSTANDING value. When you update your camera body, you'll most likely still be able to use these lenses and get even better shots.

I agree that some salesmen are just trying to push the camera du jour, but most people in the industry will tell you that any Canon body that can accept an L-series lens will produce sharper images with better color and contrast than a kit or offbrand variant.
