I found the camera and gear I want to buy at a very good price at Abe's of Maine. Does anyone have experience purchasing from them? Has anyone returned anything to them? It's a new Canon so I ask is it really new? Is it grey market? Is it kosher?

I only ordered from them once, good deal on a good camera with full warranty. Only problem was they pestered the heck out of me peddling other add-ons I didn't want or need. I just didn't want the hassle so I didn't use them again but there wasn't anything wrong with the merchandise.

The old Abe's of Maine had a good rep. They went bankrupt in 2012.
The new one is classified as a "Bait and Switch" and has a very bad rep. Plus they are not an authorized Canon dealer like the old one.

It used to be good, but now it's not. Ignore any good prices you might see. Buy from a real camera dealer. Yes, it is Kosher, but that's irrelevant. :D

If that's the case then your item won't ship until the 12th.
Plus I noticed that they only charge sales tax for NJ. So they may actually be Abe's of New Jersey.

I went to there store on Route 1 in Maine years ago - when they were still good. They've moved several times since then, but kept the name. It could be a whole different group of people running the store now.

Same answer as others: I ordered a camera from them, refused an expensive and not-needed accessory. The camera never showed up.

Really sorry to hear this. The old store/company had knowledge and class.

Excellent post and right on the money. Back in the 80's and 90's I bought lots of stuff from them and never looked back-excellent quality, huge selection, great service and very competitive prices. Now I would only buy stuff like camera bags, filters or other stuff that is relatively inexpensive and hard to screw up.

Pretty good to deal with about 15-20 years ago. Then they started pushing extras you didn't need at ridiculous prices so I stopped buying from them. Found B&H, Adorama, and Cameta, who are very professional.

Not necessarily, in most states the Sales and Use taxes are only applicable if the item is bought in or shipped to a location within the state, but if they have any 'brick an mortar' facility in the state to which they are shipping, they are then obligated to collect that state's tax, if they are registered as a sales tax agent in that other state . That's why most internet purchases from states other than your own are not taxed.
