I am fairly new to DSLR and cannot figure out how to shoot both cards in JPEG - IPhoto cannot read the NEF - at least I cannot figure out how to get it to read the card. Please tell me if you can record Card 1 in JPEG and use Card 2 as a backup.

Hi and welcome to UHH. You raised an interesting question as I'm contemplating doing this for my upcoming two week road-trip (haven't yet decided). I probably won't as I can just wait till the software is available later this year to read the RAW files.

I'm looking in the manual right now (page 77) and it's not really descriptive on whether or not this can be done. I'd be surprised if it can't be done. Guess I'll have to try it on the camera itself.

Couple of things... I have a D7100, not a D7200, but I would think the menu button on the back brings up the menu on the LCD panel, select the shooting menu and see if it has a ROLE PLAYED BY SLOT 2 selection, that is where you tell it how you want the card slots to be used. Be aware, it only does what it can do, not necessarily what you want. ;)

The other thing is that pretty much the ONLY software that will read the raw files from a new camera is the software that came with it or is available on the Mfg. site - it will take a few weeks or months for other software, like Apple for iPhoto to catch up and revise their raw conversion software, so you can shoot raw+JPG, JPG only or shoot raw and make use of the Nikon software (View NX2, Capture NX-D or View NX-I)

BTW - to shoot both cards in JPG, set the quality setting to JPG and set the role played by slot 2 to overflow or backup based on your preference.

Photogene app for iPhone or iPad will read and edit raw. I also think that another app called PS Express will read them. I did one or two using photogene. Neither are free but are not expensive. Both are pretty good editors by the way.

That's what I thought, thanks! Wish it was stated as simply in the manual.....

I don't have the D7200 but I do have the D7000 and D610 with similar RAW/JPEG and 2 card slot options. First I'd say checkout your manual and see what it says. or this is what I do on my cameras:
1) In the shooting menu go to Image quality and pick any of the JPEG options that you want (without the NEF(RAW)

2) in the shooting menu go to Role played in slot 2 and select overflow

Welcome to the UHH and hope this helps.

That's what I usually do with two-clot cameras. the manual will explain how to do that, and the display on top will show which card you are formatting.

I have a D7200. See my thread on this topic. Other than the Nikon software you can download, there is nothing out there yet that can work with these NEF files. Adobe will catch up in a month or two. I shoot both slots without a problem. It's in one of the menus. I'd suggest downloading the PDF version of the manual from Nikon, I have it with me at all times in my smart phone. Good luck.

In your menu go to image and change to Jpeg and whatever you shoot will be in Jpeg automatically, whether it goes intoslot 1 or 2

Buy the Darrell Young book on the D7200. David Busch has a good one also. I've done this with my last three Nikons. Young presents all the features much better than the official manual. There are settings that are gems, but the official manual, while it notes them, does not highlight the importance. The Young books do.

Go to the Nikon site and download the codec for your platform. You might consider getting better software to do your photo editing. From what I have seen iPhoto is pretty basic and offers little benefit to shooting raw over jpeg. A good conventional raw converter will be able to really extract the best from your files.
