I had the 1.4g, and just did not like it that much. It was fine at 5.6 and above, but not IMO very good wide open. Since wide apertures are the reason I buy fast primes, I sold it and bought the 1.8. Like it a lot on my D810. So much in fact that I'm considering a couple of the other 1.8's.

I have the 1.8D at half the price. Check the reviews- no need to spend more unless your camera doesn't have a focus motor. ;)

I have a Nikon D-7100. I bought the lens for my grandson's basketball. It works just fine. Can't beat it for the price. $100.00 Approx.
Best, Jules

I have both the 50mm f/1.4G and the 50mm f/1,8G, they are both excellent lenses. A lot depends on how you plan to use it. If you are planning to shoot in extremely low light, the 50mm f/1.4G could be worth the extra expense to you. Otherwise you will find the 50mm f/1.8G produces great results for about half the price. It is actually a little lighter than the f/1.4 and I think it focuses a hair faster.

1/2 F stop is not a big difference, the little brother is better.

This is a great lens. Light and very sharp. 5 years ago I traded for a 1.4, as I shoot in low light when in covered markets in the middle east and africa.

The 85 f/1.8 would be a excellent choice, also sharp as a tack.

Great lens and great price! Can't beat the combo. If you have a focus motor in your camera, I would opt for the
50 f1.8d Just as sharp and at around $75 can't be beat.

Looks really sharp if you put the Leica 52mm lens shade on it

It will suck in the light!! F2.8's can't hold a candle to a 1.8 for lowlight shooting.

Again, if you have a camera with a focusing motor in it, go with the 50D. Remember, too, that the lens will give you the field of view of a 75mm lens. It will be a little too long to shoot family dinners, but that length will be good for overall shooting.
You don't need a camera with a focusing motor in it as the 50mm, 1.8 has it's motor in the lens!! It's one of the sharpest lens in my bag and is usually on one of my D7000s with my zoom on the other!! Buy it, you won't be disappointed and you'll learn how to use you legs as a zoom with this prime lens!!
