Andrea, I suspect you are going to want a heavy, very steady tripod with that lens. A monopod probably won't hack it.

I just took it out for my first test drive handheld before the light was gone for the evening. It is heavy and I braced against my back porch railing but I don't think I did too bad. You are correct I will be getting a good heavy duty tripod for this monster but I am also determined to be able to use it handheld to some extent.

I have 3 lady friends that have your lens and they all hand hold it at times to great success. You bought a great lens and you will be happy with it, and you will love a good monopod for certain shots. Good luck, can't wait to see some posts. I did all my shots hand held and now find the monopod to be a great tool for certain shots. I still prefer to hand hold for BIF shots. Again good luck

Thank you for the encouragement. I am truly looking forward to learning this lens. I can already tell it is the quietest lens I own and it focuses fast. I took a few this evening but the light was going. A cardinal was sitting out in a tree behind my house acting as model. I am definitely going to look into this particular monopod. Your results look to be really good with it.

Most importantly Andrea have fun and you will learn easily, it's nice you already have a model posing for you. You are doing all the right things

Had a few minuets to try out my new monopod, so I ran down the road and found a Red Shouldered Hawk and some wild rudbeckia to try it on. This was my first time using a monopod and really liked the feel, and solidness, and am happy with the results, kept the camera and lens nice and steady for sharp images. Please try the download

beautiful shots gregory...i love the flower shots! i've never seen a monopod with feet...great idea and much easier to hold the camera steady. i use a monopod quite often, and even use it for a hiking stick sometimes. :-P

I really like these Greg and the feet shown in the picture of the monopod looks like that is a great addition. Question, are the feet attached via a swivel mechanism to allow for tilting the camera while on uneven ground? What brand is it? Again great shots Greg. :-D :-D

Thanks so much merrytexan, so glad you enjoyed, always appreciate your looking and kind comment. I like the feet idea, and it does seem to be more steady. They make just the feet that can be added to a monopod, B&H and Adorama carry them,

Thanks so much Jim, always appreciate your looking and kind comment, so glad you enjoyed. The feet part is what sold me. They can be bought separately and many models are available. The one I have is about $34.00, they can be locked so the monopod stands straight up or unlocked so the ball on the bottom can swivel, just seems to add stability. If I see some bif I simply release the camera and the monopod stands up.
