It is a "little" bigger than the 18-140 I had on the camera but I don't think he'll actually notice. BUT, how will I explain that big 70-200/2.8 when I pull it out & put it on the camera? He WILL notice that! Birthday present? Right now, I'm trying to talk him into a trip to Ireland! Then I can justify the lenses!!?!!!?

If he asks, tell him it's a kit lens that came with the camera that you never used before.
I had a Sigma 150-500 that I bought and my wife never noticed it.
Groupon has an Ireland trip, with airfare, at $99 per person.

Grandma, actually I learned it about 50 years ago after I got out of the Army and money became somewhat less tight. The problem hasn't reared its ugly presence in a long while because we both know where the limit is that causes budget strain, and now it is mostly taxes and the new Unaffordable Care Act.

In life there is always a time where we have to face the reality of what we have done. It is not like you have committed a real crime or something. It really depends on him. But you want to celebrate your new purchase that I can understand as a photographer. But my wife who says the hates photography just puts up with it.

Just leave it for awhile. Discuss what you're doing photographically in a casual manner. When you do bring it out, do it casually and make no comment. If you are asked, then say, "Haven't you seen it before. I've had it for some time."

Glad I have my own money..... I usually discuss large purchases, or let him know why I need such and such. When I find a good deal on whatever I want, I get it. I don't do it without a lot of studying and comparison first. He does the same with me. My other half is definitely the frugal half, thank goodness! Moths fly from his wallet.

If you need to hide it, you shouldn't have purchased them in the first place. Did the purchase take food off the table, did you lose the roof over your head, did you fail to pay bills? If the answer is NO just use them as normal and it will all be fine. My wife wouldn't know one camera or lens from another and she wouldn't really care. She can get what ever she wants and the same goes for me. I am retired since 2008 and worked my entire life so now I can do as I please. My last new toy was the Canon 7D mark II.... A little step up from my Canon T-3 aka: 1100D. Good luck and remember "HONESTY IS THE BEST POLICY!"

Eventually, you will acquire enough lenses that the new additions won't stick out so bad. My 70-200 was put on a shelf for a few weeks, then the reply could be, "what, this old lens? I've had this for a while.

It can get expensive. But the freedom is well worth it!

No need for a handle, you can get a thermal mug shaped like a canon lens thru amazon. There are 2 sizes, single cup size and and travel mug size. I was given one for my birthday shortly after I purchased my first dslr. I thought it was real at first, lol.

"Where'd that come from? It new?"
"What! This? It's been around for months!"
"I don't remember you mentioning it."
"What! You must be kidding! I SHOWED it to you! Told you about it! You never listen......"
"Huh? Well..... Okay.... Be back in a little while, gotta mow the lawn."
End of conversation.

Doesn't sound like the kind of relationship I have in my marriage. First you something behind his back because you think he might not like it, then you want to schmooze him into taking you to Ireland.

Sorry, I can't give you any advice on this one except you should rethink your relationship and the trust you put in each other.

Everyone is going about it all wrong. My wife told me long ago, (when I only had 53 cameras), that if number 54 came in the house that I'd be down in the basement with them. When I get a new, for me, acquisition, I sneak it into the garage before coming into the house. a few days later, I'll ask my wife if she's seen my so and so. She usually answers that it's probably down in the basement. I then go down there and "magically" find it and bring it upstairs in plain view. It's worked for almost 45 years.

I really think she's on to me though because I get volunteered to be the official photographer for church, family and charity functions. She tells everyone that her husband has all this wonderful equipment so he may as well use it. See, just get 50+ cameras & equipment and your wife will never know, or will she???????
