Stopped into Tall's Camera in Bellevue, WA today--really liked the Nikon D5500. $799 with an 18-55mm lens; they also had an 18-250mm lens for about $100 off. Very tempting, felt good in my hands, and I like the touchscreen overlay. Really thinking I might want to go with it. Hope I can find a good sale once it's time to buy.

Billyspad real name is Steve Worland. A simple search will show he is nothing more than a troll who must lead a miserable existence because he has nothing better to do than to troll photography websites, forums and blogs and spew nonsense.

Steve, it takes very little intelligence to be condescending and rude. But of course your objective was to fill the void of attention that you obviously are starved for. I really feel bad for unhappy people like you

RSumners, there are alot of good people on this forum and you can get alot of good info here. As you can see from almost all of the replies there are alot of people here who are willing to help. You have gotten alot of great suggestions already. The one I would echo is go to a local Camera store and actually put the models your are considering in your hand. The really cool thing about cameras right now is the quality of most camera's today is exceptional. In the same price range you are going to find Cannon is not better than Nikon or visa versa. The real difference will be in features, they may have slightly different features. Only you can decide which features are important to you. The other real (or maybe imagined) difference is how the camera actually feels in your hands. You need to pick them up feel them. Put them up to your eye and see which one(s) feel the most natural in your hands. I am a Nikon shooter, the D5500 is a great camera for the money, but so isnt the T5i. You will have no regrets with either. Good Luck

Thank you. I've actually found everybody (else) on this forum to be very knowledgeable and helpful, and have received some really great advice, both on the forum and through messaging. Most people are, basically, good eggs (as my wife would say). I looked at the Canon T5i today and the Nikon D5500--the Nikon seems quite a bit lighter in weight, and the touchscreen overlay is great--also has the advantage of WiFi, which I really like. Definitely leaning towards the D5500. From what I've been told, the Canon T5i is about 3 years old, and the D3300 was made to compete with it directly, but Nikon has moved on with their series a bit faster than Canon on a comparable camera.

Good for you. I am still not ready to branch out from my Canon SX40 zoom camera.

Greetings,
Planning on buying my first DSLR camera, mostly for travel and outdoor shots while hiking. Any suggestions? I am purely an amateur, and not very good at that. I am rather partial to Canons, have a PowerShot SX230 HS currently, but am open to any opinions. I have been looking at the Canon EOS Rebel T5i and the Nikon D5500 (which has WiFi, which is a plus). Thanks in advance! Would like to stay under $1000 if possible.

The older Olympus E-M5 (still available for a short while for ~$700) is rainproof and there several lenses that are rainproof too. I have never stopped my shooting for rain although it becomes harder to keep the front element dry the harder it rains. It is a much smaller camera system than Sony, Canon, or Nikon and travels easy. My camera body, three lenses, flash, batteries, filters, and other accessories all fit in to a camera bag that will meet the airlines' 14 X 8 X 18 personal item carry-on. This is not the normal larger baggage carry-on, but the much smaller personal carry-on size.

If you spend the time checking out the cameras and camera reviews, you will pick out the right camera to meet your needs. I am sure you will be happy with Canon, Nikon, Sony, Panasonic, Olympus, or any other brand if you do your research and know why you are buying the camera. Be careful not to put "blinders" on to what are your needs and what is available.

Thank you. The Olympus EM5 looks like something to definitely consider.

Of course we can't put down all the Brit's. We've got a lot of bad ones here in the US (not bad Brits, but bad human beings). I guess all we can do is to try to be the best that we can be, and I fail at that more than I'd admit.

I'm glad you are back! Hope to hear of many good experiences you have with that new camera! Maybe you can even post some of the photos.

Whatever you decide on, you're going to end up eventually, with extra lenses. If you're taking it hiking, they soon add up to a lot of weight. I would suggest you by the body only, and then get a long range zoom. The Tamron SP 18 - 270 would be a good choice.

A fellow Pentax user!!! Not many of us about my friend.
In the last 18 months I have bought a house in a country thats very different to UK where I am actually from I have bought a car had extensive work carried out on my house by all sorts of different tradesmen bought many electrical appliances etc. All this without consulting forums of any description.
Why is it so damn difficult for some members of society to buy a camera? How ever do they make the major decisions in life?
I sometime wonder if they wear shoes with buckles or elastic sides cos they have not yet mastered shoe laces!
I hope to replace the battered ol' Pentax within the next 6 months you will not find a Canon or Nikon type question on here from me. I will use the brain my maker gave me and reach a decision like I do about all other purchases.

Jaackil....Billyspad may be rude and inappropriate and should be reprimanded, but nobody's real name should be outed on UHH. Also, he's not a troll since he posts photos on UHH and participates seriously as a photographer. We've had rude posters on UHH before and dealt with them. They either leave or reform.

Some of what Billyspad said was right on target. He just didn't stop when he should have. My suggestion for buying that new camera? Read specifications until you find the one that fits your needs.

First of all, I did not "out him". Simply putting Billyspad in a google search returned his name and a whole lot more information about him. He put his name on the internet for everyone to see. I suggest you google him and you will see he posts the same rude and hateful stuff on a multitude of sites. He is plain and simple a bully. Are you sure you want to defend a bully?
As far as "My suggestion for buying that new camera? Read specifications until you find the one that fits your needs". Did it ever occur to you that maybe a novice wouldn't understand specifications? Do you think that the average person that goes into buy a car understands horsepower and torque? Do you think the average photography novice understands what mega pixals really means? We all know companies market the more mega pixels the better but is that really true in all cases? Could a novice over purchase if they relied on the marketing of big companies? So the OP was doing their research, they came here and asked the community their opinions. It is also possible that the OP had read the specs and now wanted to know what people that actually used the equipment thought. So I personally do not think "My suggestion for buying that new camera? Read specifications until you find the one that fits your needs' is a particularly useful suggestion.
My apologies SteveR, and all the other Hogs reading this post, for Hijacking it with this rant but as a relative newbie also, it is very frustrating when members asking for advice get rude and mean comments. I have said this before, if you dont have something nice to say or valuable to the discussion don't waste your time, pass the post by. SteveR my comments are not meant as terse towards you, far from it. I hope you do not receive them that way, I just do not take kindly to bullies.
