I have found that in every case, without exception, whether it's a camera body or a lens, a local dealer will always be the first to have it. At least in my experience this was true with the 70-200 VR II, the D800, and the D750. Put an order in with your favorite local dealer and you will likely have yours while those who ordered over the internet will still be waiting.

Does it really matter if your camera arrives a day or two one way or the other, from one seller to another? Prices are somewhat (if not entirely) regulated by Nikon, so I would expect that all sellers will receive their allotment at the same time. You won’t know which has more pending orders before yours comes in.

Interesting that Nikon has the 18-140 on sale for $1499 with 7200 purchase!

All dealers will have stock on hand the day that Nikon designates for release. They are assigned different quantities though.

Hence big stores or chains will have a larger stock than smaller independent stores. For a popular new release none of them will have a large enough stock to cover all orders though! And the re-orders are just as limited as the initial orders.

The big difference is that a large store with an allotment of 2000 units simply does not devote enough staff to filling orders to ship 2000 of one model of camera in the first week it is on sale. Maybe 25 to 50 a day, at most. An order to a major online store might be one out of 5000, and at 50 day that takes months!

A small independent store may only have an initial stock of 10 cameras, but if you are number 5 on their list it will be delivered the week after the release date. They may only have 8 or 9 pre-orders, and two of those may not have the money on that day. So calling a few smaller stores is almost certain to produce a camera for sale this instant, as opposed to potentially waiting weeks or even months for an order from a large store.

Don't you pay an extra fee to be a Prime member at Amazon as well as sales tax? I think the rest is a guessing game, as to who will get and ship first. My first choice is always B&H, but I am not knocking the other players, either.

Amazon, I believe, only charges sales tax in states that have an Amazon Distribution center. They charged tax in Kansas until they closed their center this year. Now there is no sales tax. Maybe Maryland also have a law on taxes for out of state.

They opened a distribution center in Maryland, great for getting stuff quickly, not so great when you buy something that costs a lot. lol!

Hey gang. I feel a GAS attack coming on, want to add a D7200 to my arsenal. I'm an Amazon Prime member, so I can get free shipping when it's released if I order there. My question is, out of all the usual suspects like B&H, Adorama, KEH, Cameta and smaller players like Roberts, Precision, etc., who will more likely have them in stock first, based on the vast experience of the UHH community? Are some pre-orders more equal than others? Thanks in advance...

PC, in my vast experience, I'd say, if you DON'T order it from Canon, your GAS will just simply persist!! :lol.

I had a personal idea that the first product off the line for a new product may not be the most sorted-out. It has been my opinion that later production usually has some bug or flaw fixed, that was found by first adopters. But I can't point to any direct experience. Any thoughts?

The USA are never the 1st adopters.

I ordered my Nikon D7200 from B&H this week and they included free overnight shipping. They also have the 18-140 kit on sale for $1,496.

I must be one of those lucky first 50 in the world, mine is on the way by UPS for delivery tomorrow from B&H. Maybe I should buy a lottery ticket! :-)
